Geboers took full advantage of a broken front wheel on Vehkonen's Cagiva to win the first moto, while Vehkonen limped back to the pits, taking a tough DNF (did not finish). Geboers also put to good use a first-lap, first-moto crash by American Bob Hannah, who went on to finish fifth in the moto and take the win in the second for second overall. The first lap of the race wasn't a good one for Team Suzuki riders. Up front, Sweden's jorgen Nilsson was leading the way followed by Geboers and Vehkonen. Fifteen minutes into the moto, Geboers found the hot line around Nilsson for the lead, and on the same lap, Vehkonen packed it in with the broken hub_ As the race wore on, it was pretty much aJI Geboer ' as he pulled away for the win, while Hannah was busy working -.-; 5 way up through the pack, and so was Great Britain's new rising star Rob Herring. Herring also crashed on the first lap. "The back wheel kicked out and down 1 went," said the Yamaha rider. He eventually worked his way up to third. Hannah finished fifth. Second went to ilsson. The second moto was a runaway for Hannah, who blasted into the lead right from the start and never looked back. The Suzuki rider took the holeshot with Whatley close behind, but the Brit eventually faded back to 13th. Herring got off the line in fifth but worked his way into econd, barely keeping Hannah within sight, while Geboers was running third ahead of Vehkonen. Late in the 45-rninute-plus two lap moto, Geboers had closed the gap on Herring and proceeded to pass without a fight. At this point, Hannah held a commanding lead, and Geboers knew he had the ra e wrapped up where he was. Hannah cruised in for the WIO ahead of Geboers, Herring and Vehkonen. • Results OVERALL: 1.
