FeS,rillp, CA 90670 (213) 69S-2746 Ricky Graham (3) won a hard-fought heat race over David (38) during short track action at Creek County Speedway. . amounted to $130 'per lap, while Graham won the 1T trophy dash to boost his evening's earnings to more than $1300. Wednesday Surprise·of-the-night honors went to local favorite David Copeland during 1T qualifyil1g. Copeland rode his Jobco Harley-Davidson to fastest time. But Copeland came up short off the line when the 1T trophy dash starting £lag waved, allowing Texan Poovey and Adams to dive for the lead going into tum one. Graham moved up from fourth in the sixrider field to nab the win on the last lap aboard his Arai-sponsored Honda. Adams and Poovey rounded out the top three. Poovey won the first 10-lap Expert heat race ahead of Orr and Copeland, while Jones came from sixth at the start to top heat two ahead,of Texans Bubba Bentley and Sweet. Boody ~rsevered through a crash-marred heat three, leading jorgensen and Herdon across the line, while heat four saw Adams hold off Graham, with Junior Pro Kris Kiser of Hawaii finishing third. The top three riders f:r:om each heat transferred driectly to the main. "Dave Hebb of Illinois powered his Mach One Racing Harley to a close win over Oklahoma motocrosser Guy Cooper in the first 10-lap semi, and Gary Kidd topped fellow Texan Shane Jolly in semi two. The top two finishers in each semi were gridded on the back row of the main event. The 25-lap 1T main event was a no holds barred bamburner with Adams, Jones and Boody trading the lead while Ricky Graham rode' thr.bugh the field from the back of tIle pack, picking off one rider at a time, passing at least one rider per lap for the last eight laps. The crowd went wild when Graham finally caught Adams ·on the white flag lap. Oklahoma's Adams, who is very popular in Tulsa, drifted two feet higher than usual coming out of the last turn on the last lap and Graham tucked under Adams, outracing him to the wire. Boody and Jones rounded out the top four, and Jorgensen finished fifth after a race-long charge that began in 13th place. Rounding out tme top 10 were Poovey, Sweet, Hebb, l-Jerndon and Copeland. Thursday Less than one-tenth of a second sepa'rated the LOp 10 qualifiers during Thursday's time trials. Jones, who skipped practice because he was suffering from the flu, qualified fastest to lead the top six qualifiers into the trophy dash. Four different riders led the fivelap trophy dash and when the dust cleared it was Boody who held the edge over Poovey, Jones and Orr. Boody came right back to win the first Expert heat race over Jones and Herndon, while Orr topped the second heat .ahead of Poovey and Willie McCoy. Graham won the hard-fought third heat with a last lap charge that put him in front of David Copeland and Sweet. Adams also came from behind to top heat four ahead of Jorgensen and Don Wilson. The top three riders transferred from each heat to the final. Since the mai.n-event line-up would include only 14 riders, only the winner from each semi made the final. Alan Powers topped a wheel-to-wheel finish with Bently and Tomas Colson in the first semi, and local favorite Danny Cartwright won the second semi ahead of Mike Patterson and Gary Kidd. The start of the 25-lap final on Creek County Speedway's semibanked, eighth-mile oval pitted several local-favorite Oklahomans against some of the best riders in the nation. The track sported a wide, dry groove with a cushion on the outside line. The lead changed several times between six different riders before Graham crashed on lap six, giving Adams a solid lead ahead of a tight four-rider pack hehind him. While the battle waged up front, almost no one noticed Jones, who was riding at the back of the pack after a poor start. Jones picked off riders one at a time until he was fourth at the halfway flags. Adams picked off Boody and Orr and appeared to have the win in hand on lap 21 when Jones appeared out of nowhere. Adams was having problems with traction and Jones was hooking up. The two riders exited turn four on the last lap in close quarters and raced wide open, side-by-side, to the checkered flag. They finished almost too close to call, but each of the official scorers gave the win to Adams by less than the width of a front tire. Jones, a true sportsman, was the first to congratulate Adams. Orr, Boody and Sweet rounded out the top five; Herndon, Jorgensen, Poovey, Graham and Cartwright filled out \he top 10. Results WEDNESDAY TO: 1. Ricky Graham (Han); 2. Scott Adams (HD); 3.
