Lazor, who rarely misses a transfer in Scratch racing, was pressuring elson for the point position and pulled a 180. By the time he gOt back up and running it was too late to pick up the transfer spot Diem, on the other hand, had a fight of his own. Lewis held him off in his heat race, as Lewis was £lying around the track. But Diem's Keech Speedway Videos/Diem's Cycle Godden was still sputtering and misfiring. By the semis, Diem had it soned out as he won going away. The Scratch main was the last event of the night and by this time there was only a trace o£ traction on the outside. Diem pulled the number four spot and with that the race was over before the gates went up. Had it been a dry evening Nelson could have challenged on the inside, but as it was had to settle for second. Lewis was third followed by Burge. Greg Didas had the much-desired outside position for the Division two main, but gauged the slickness wrong, dropped it in turn one, leaving Charlie Jacobs in the lead. Phillips takes his first in Sears Point Vintage By Michael Green 54 SONOMA, CA, JUNE 28 Dan Phillips, mounted aboard his BSA B50, took his first win o£ the season plus the 500cc points lead in round four of the CVRG Historic Series at Sears Point International Raceway.· Due to high entry fees imposed by the AFM-North since the end o£ last season, Vintage grids have been quite small, thus only 11 machines sat on Sunday's grid.. When the green fell, Phillips pulled the holeshot and was never to be seen from again. The 500cc Premier race was now between MorkRacing's Fred Mork on a DBD Goldstar BSA, and newcomer James Banke, al 0 BSA-mounted; Banke beat out Mork for second. In Lightweight action, the Ducatis o£ Bret Morshead and Mike Green both carne home with victorie . Both Morshead and Green came out o£ the WCBR stable, and are sponsored by Hap Jones/Avon Tires/Castroll Shoo. Morshead got what must have been the worst stan of the day, later saying, "The dutch wouldn't engage until all the way out." Once rolling, he soon caught the 250 o£ Green. As the twO exited turn II, Green repassed to put a spark imo Morshead. Within one lap, Morshead caught the Ducatis o£ Bill Ojala, SCOll Borem, and leader SCOll Obermuller. On the following lap, Morshead had overhauled Ojala and Borem, and was hot on Obermuller's rear render. By lap three Morshead was out front and catching the leading 5005, but later slowed. Dean Vincelet gOt a great start on his twin-cylinder Yamaha and had Brown right behind him, challenging for the lead. Brown tried several inside-to-outside moves in an effort to get past Vincelet, but to no avail. Brown then went to the outside line and skimmed along the hay bales to sneak by Vincelet Brown held ore Vincelet by a slim margin at the checkers to take home the trophy. Kevin Crowley used his new Yamaha flat tracker to score the victory in the Open Junior class, holding off the challenges of HondaTQounted Greg Soderer all the way to the checkered nag. Results 50: 1. Randy Beremen (Yam), Hawthorne hauls at Pit Stop Speedway MX By Jenny Bayles PERRY, OK, JUNE 27 Kawasaki rider Dennis Hawthorne, took home overall victories in both the 125 and 250cc Expert classes at Pit Stop Speedway in Perry. The Palmer/Reid designed track, and $2000 purse brought out more Experts than the facility, has ever seen, with riders coming from as far as Arkansas and Nebraska. The first moro o£ the 250cc class saw Hawthorne snatch the holeshot with Jeff Schumacker in a close econd, Kawasaki-mounted Carrol Richardson in third, followed by Clay Hoenshell. By the £ifth lap, Hawthorne and Richardson had pulled away from the rest of the pack. The order of the top four riders were the same at the checkered nag as they were on the first lap with Hawthorne taking first, Honda rider Schumacker £ini bing second, Richardon settling for third, and Hoen hell in fourth. Second moto action saw Hawthorne, once again, tea1the holeshot with Hoenshel1 on his tail, and Jason Upshaw in third.. As in the fir tmoto, the sequence of the riders did not alter as they crossed the finish line, Hawthorne in first, Hoenshell in second, and Upshaw taking third. First moto action in the I25cc Expert class saw a lillIe more action than in the 250s. Honda rider Terry Tinney grabbed the holeshot with Hawthorne in second £ollowed by Kawasaki-mounted St,ephenson. All three riders were very close and in single file, just waiting for an opportunity to pass. Hawthorne battled with Stephenson to maintain his second place position, when on the third lap he managed to get past Hawthorne and take second place. The remainder o£ the race saw Stephenson strive to capture the lead, chasing Tinney in and out o£ every corner with Tinney prevailing, Stephenson in second and Hawthorne taking third. Spectators saw Hoenshell get the holeshot in the second moto with Hawthorne in second and Stephen:son in third. This moto was much like the others with the riders all very close together, and the holeshot rider maintainin~ his lead to the checkered £lag With Hawthorne taking a close econd and Stephenson finishing third. Miller TULSA, OK, JUNE 17-18 "I thought I would just slide down .here and make some easy money, but - holy cow! - it looks like a National!" Those were the words o£ Colorado road race ace Danny Walker £ollowing the Miller Mid-American Championship, held at Creek County peedway just outside Tulsa. The two-day hort trackITT program included such big name riders as two-time ational Champion Ricky Graham and National contenders Ronnie Jones, Ted Boody, SanlffiY Sweet, Alex Jorgensen, Terry Poovey, Billy Herndon and ScOll Adams. Cali£ornian Graham won the "IT race Wednesday night ahead of Oklahoma riders Adams and Boody. Adams followed up by claiming the shon track victory Thursday night, finishing only inches in from o£ fellow Oklahoman Jones arid Texan Charlie Orr. The total purse for the two nights of racing was $10,000 and bonus bucks ($2000 collected from fans in the grandstands) were paid both nights in special rive-lap trophy dashes. Boody won the shon track trophy dash, collecting $650 which
