Bruce Nield used ~he awesome power of his 860cc Honda Interceptor to win the Fourth of july, lOO-mile endurance race at Lhe North Carolina Motor Speedway. Nield, on the Hardees of Winchester/Rockhard Excavating Inc./Telco Construction Co.-sponsored Honda, got the holeshot and was first into the steep banking followed by local rider Arnold Hastings, Georgia's Bob Green and jim Sherrill. Green dropped into second with Sherrill pushing around Arnold Hastings on lap [our to gain third. Sherrill was able to go in much [aster and deeper into the turns than the r~st, allowing him to gain substanual ground on the leaders early in the race. G~n.outbraked Nield going into the mheld and quickly moved around several slower riders. Nield was patient and waited until reentering the banking to blast back into the lead. Nield used the Honda's power on the one mile banked section. Robert Bradley made his bid [or the front on a New River Motor Sports-sponsored FZRIOOO, as he moto~ed past both Hastings and Shernll to move mto third. The battle raged around ,Lhe 1.7 mile cours~ with Sherrill running it in deep mto turn one and Bradley right there every rune. Finally the inevitable occurred. Two bikes occupying Lhe same space at the same time. SherriJ I held it on a fraction longer gomg LOtO one and Bradley went down. The race was red £lagged. At Lhe restart Green shot past Nield and held the lead [or one lap only to be blttzed on t~e front straight by Nield. Nleld contmued to build a lead on second place Green and by the half way point had 17 seconds on Green. With Bradley out, Sherrill held on to third ahead o[ Hastings on the Suzuki. Mark Long moved up to the fourth place spot, while Dave George moved up to filth as Lhe race wound down to its final laps. Up front, jim Sherrill passed Green for second on the back straight. Nield maintained a comfortable lea~ while the battle raged behind hLm. Green c6ntinued to close in the [inaI laps, finally pulling off a last lap pass in the infield portion to grab second from Sherrill. Results . REGIONAL 100.: 1. Bruce Nield (Han); 2.
