Schwartz again at Speedway USA By Scott Daloisio VICTORVILLE, CA, JULY 4 The largest crowd in the history o( Speedway USA gathered at the facility on this Independence Day. What they saw was another sensational performance by southern California's winningest rider, Bobby Schwartz, who took home the honors in the Scratch main event. Schwartz blasted into the lead at the start of the main and was a bike dear of Steve Lucero, Brad Oxley and "Fast" Eddie Castro. Castro whose ?utside rides are literally br~thtak: 109 at Speedway USA, went wide found the drive, and swooped int~ the second spot. The ~minutive Castro, who just a f~w mmute~ earlier had a light but senous sparrmg season on the track wi~ Scott Brant, kept the charge gomg and went after Schwartz. Schwartz took the Budweiser/Silkolene/Malcolm Smith/C.T.!. Brace/ Justice Brothers Weslake to the outside at the end of lap one to shut the door on the high £lying Castro. qutr? kept it close until the final orCUlt when the "Boogaloo Kid" moved away from the field. When the checkere.d came out, it was Schwartz by four over Castro and Oxley, who took third from Lucero on the final lap. ' Louis Kossuth arrived at Speedway USA in less than a holiday mood. The previous Saturday evening,. Kos~uth had powered the NJKI AraJ/Smnh Jawa to the win in the Handicap main. That win put Kossuth in a Handicap heat which he won and then a semi which he also captured. That left one race to go and that was the eight lap main event. . A seemingly harm less tangle occurred in the first bend of the Handicap main. It may have looked seemingly harmless but Weslake riding JeU Johnson suffered a very nasty cut on his right foot and was immediately loaded on'to a stretcher and transported to a hospital. When the race was. restarted Trinon Cirello grabbed the lead off the 10 over Kevin Krugh and Greg Hancock. Cirello marched his lead into a wide margin while Krugh, Hancock, Kossuth and Andy Northrup had a war for second. Kossuth bolted from that knot on lap two and set his sights on the streaking leader. Kossuth and Cireno, both former Junior stars, engaged in a tremend~us battle for the point position. At fust Kossuth went to the outside bu,t he couldn't find enough power to make the long way work. He then dropped down low but Cirello wasn't ~bout to move off the pole. Cirello opened up a wide margin with two laps to go but Kossuth may have been playing possum. When the white came out, Kossuth seemed to screw the throttle on and he went charging after Cirello. As they came off turn two the final time Kossuth raced past on the inside and went on fOT his second win in a row. CireJlo ended up disappointed, and I~ sec?nd place, with Kansas City's JIIDIOle O'Dell third. Results SCRATCH: 1. Bobby Schwanz (Wes); 2. Ed Castro (Was); 3. Srad OXley (Was); 4. Steye Lucero (Gdnl. When the smoke cleared, it was Schwartz taking his accustomed trip to victory circle and collecting the biggest paycheck of the night. For once, Schwartz didn't get the gate. Phil Collins, coming orf gate two, came off the line with the lead just ahead of Ott. Schwartz was coming from gate four and he was ready to mount a challenge in the first bend. That was just about the time Ott and Collins began banging on each other. Ott shot down the track on the back straight and almost came together with Schwartz. Ott was the first to make it to turn three but was heading backwards. Schwartz had absolutely no where to go and he plowe.d into Ott. Both riders then piled into the turn three crash wall with a thud. Out came the red and it was time to check on th.e well being of both riders. Both staggered to their feet, and were ready for the rerun. Ott got the gate on the second start but Schwartz pushed his Silkolene/Budweiser/ Justice Brothers/C. T. I. Brace/ CireJlo Racing Weslake into the lead in the first bend. Ott found some traction and got tremendous drive out of two. He wheelied for about haH the straight but Schwartz held him off and led into turn three. Schwartz was wearing a brand new pair of leathers and he had to be looking to see if there was a target on them somewhere. He had enough of crashing and wheelies, and he moved out to a sizeable lead and Jet the others battle for the minor placings. Brad Oxley took on Ott and relieved him of second on lap three but it was far too late to catch the battered Schwartz and he won by a wide margin over Oxley Ott and. Collins. ' Dubb FerreJl failed to transfer on the Scratch side of the program but he made up for it by taking a very popular win,in the Handicap main. Kevin Krugh, Tuff McBride, and come back rider, Mike Curoso, raced off the 30 yard line for the lead at the outset. Results SCRATCH: 1. Bobby Schwanz (Wes); 2. Brad Oxley (Wes); 3. Sobby on (Gdn); 4. By Scott Daloisio Schwartz slides to Ascot Speedway win COSTA MESA, CA, JULY 3 Bobby Schwartz and "Showtime" Bobby Ott displayed their own version of holiday fireworks in the Scratch main event at the Orange County Fairgrounds on "Short's GARDENA, CA, JULY 2 The phenomenal season of "Booga100" Bobby Schwartz roJled on before a packed house at Chris Agajanian's Ascot South Bay Stadium. Schwartz By Scott Daloisio won the Scratch main event for the third consecutive week. As the Scratch main riders prepared for the main, the crowd, of over 5000 fans, serenaded them with a loud version of "Louie, Louie." They should have been singing "Bobby, Bobby" as the defending National Champion roared out of gate three to take the lead from Phil Collins in the first bend. . The crowd roared when Schwartz powered the Budweiser/Silkolene/ C.T.!. Brace/Justice Brothers/Oak-. ley Weslake into the lead. They would continue to roar as another of their favorites, CoJlins, pressured Schwartz in a thrilling four lap race. Collins weni to the dirt on the outside and he jammed his bike hard into the corners. That was pulling him even and sometimes ahead of the leader, but coming off on the shorter line, Schwartz would take the lead back. Schwartz, being the shrewd ra.cer that he is, moved wider for the final lap to fend off the British invader. Collins did the only thing he could and switched down low, but Schwartz had him covered and he won by a length and a half over the former Cradley Heathen. "Showtime" Bobby Ott moved his Godden to third with Brad Oxley last. .The ei.ght-Iap, eight-rider Handicap malO was down to seven riders. S~eve Lucer~, who qualified, blew up hiS motor m the Scratch semi and was forced to withdraw. Alan Christian had problems with his own bike and was mounted on one of Don Faulkner's PAX racing machines. AndX ~~rthrup and ~otty Brown set the 1DiUal pace off the four rider 30 yard-line. Northrup out in th~ same dirt that Collin~ had been churning up, had out-powered Brown and was able to come down to the pole where he could fight off inside challenges. Brown had his problems when he wheelied off tum two on the second revolution and that allowed the "Snakeman", Keith Larsen.to enter the fray. Brown fought hard, but ~e~ eventuaJly got by as did Chrlsuan on lap four. At the halfway point, Northrup and the I;-and Prep/J&:M Silkscreen/ Cycl.e Rider/Scott Goggles/Cirello Racmg Weslake, were setting a sizzling pace. Christian was able to close the gap, but he didn't have enough time and he finished second some 20 feet back. Larsen held off yo~ng Billy Hamill for the third spot while Brad Oxley, the only rider to make both mains, rounded out the top five. Lee Edwards, racing for only the second time since cominR over from England, won the Support class main over Bernie Tusko an4 Tony Bienen.
