r---------------------==-----'al 8 a :z: ... Brian Carroll flies his Kawasaki KX125 to the 125cc A class victory at Hurricane Mills MX. Carroll t?j)ped both motos. Schwartz drifted a little coming off turn two forcing ,both Pfetzing and Lucero wide. Oxley, being alert, went underneath both of them and took over the number two spot, but Pfetzing went back around him before the end of the lap. Pfetzing turned up the heat on lap two as he found the drive on the outside. Schwartz shut the door on him as they went into turn one on lap three and Pfetzing bobbled in the heavy outside dirt. Oxley again took advantage of the situation to move into econd but once again Pfetzing took it back. Pfetzing's bobble cost him and Schwartz won his 14th South Bay Stadium main of the season by three lengths. Pfetzing, Oxley and Lucero roum;led au t the field. Earlier it was mentioned that Shawn Moran, of the British League's Sheffield Tigers, was on hand. His teammate, and brother, Kelly was also there. Kelly, the elder of the two, showed his stuff early in the Handicap main. The event was sparked by two wild crashes. The first one took place when Greg Hancock went down avoiding Walt Farnum. Hancock's bike took off and flipped down the track before it collected Bobby Ott in the chest and cleaned him off his machine as he went by. All three were shaken, but they restarted. Billy Hamill quickly got by Jay Gianetti on the restart for the lead. Kelly Moran also got by Gianetti for the second spot and he began to pressure the young Hamill. He gave chase until lap five when he touched Hamill's rear tire on the middle of the front chute. Both bikes drove directly into the wall and another red flag came out. Hamill made the restart, but Moran was out with a shoulder injury. Once the event was restarted, it was all Oxley on the Coors/International Speedway/KLOS/Scolt Goggles/ Cirello Racing Weslake. That was a major win for Oxley since he had been penalized 20 yards on the original start. Shawn Moran took a distant second with Farnum third. Results 32 SCRATCH: 1. Bobby Schwanz (Wes); 2. Tompkins tops Ace MX By John Spear MODENA, NY, JULY 12 Dennis Tompkins and Jason avohelski each won their qualifying moto in the 125cc Amateur class at the Ace MX and then battled the entire second moto before Tompkins held the lead at the end to take the overall. . Waiting in the wings the entire mota for a mistake by either of the leaders was Dennis' brother Herb. But the mistake never came so Herb settled for third, his 3-3 score gave him third overall ahead of John Wienberg's 2-5 for fourth. All three Expert classes provided tight racing with Carlo Coen winning both the 125 and 250cc Expert classes. In the l25's, Coen pulled out an early lead and let Rob McCullough (2-2), John Ryan (4-3), Todd Dippel (5-4) and Ed Foedish (3-5) swap places behind him all afternoon. Dippel still holds the lead for the Number One plate with 292 points while Ryan has 255 and Foedish 230. Coen won the 250cc Expert class, but it was tough. In the first moto, Mike Spear chased him until the last lap before letting him get away. [n the second mota, John Ryan held the lead for the first five laps with Coen and Spear on his tail. Coen got by on lap six to take the overall. Ryan held on for second when Spear was taken out by a lapped rider who had fallen on the blind-side of the newlyconstructed tunnel jump. Spear remounted for third as the top three had nearly a 4O-second lead on the next group. Spear easily won both Open Expert motos but that didn't affect the battle behind him, Jim Habacker, Keith Mann and Kyle Ellefsen who had a four-rider freighttrain both motos. Ellefsen got off behind Spear each time, but the relatively new expert fell prey to both Habacker and Mann's experience. Habacker held off Mann [or second in both motos with JUSt a wheel length separating them in the second moto. Spear is in total control o[ the points chase with 320 points to Ken Napolitano's 215. Napolitano had a 7-5 this day. The 125cc Novice class, despite qualifying motos, really mixed up the results in the second mota. Jason Linn's 2-3 was good enough for first overall while James Mangariello's 46 took second. Both first mow winners in this class, Chris Brindis and Bill Minard, ran into trouble. Results 125 EX: 1. Norris nails OMC Short Track win By Mike Thuleen BOISE, rD, JULY 7 O'Neal/KaI-Gard/K&NIT&D Racing/Ken Lenon/Wendi/Elmer Moore/Sam Hutch inson -assis ted Junior ational competitor Troy orris deIe:1ted Joel Huskey to gain victory in the Open Expert main at Owyhee M.e. hart track. Huskey Auto-Electric-supported Huskey powered his Honda into the Open Expert main lead ahead of Norris, John Colton, Todd Peugh, Rod Reynolds and JeH Russell. Reynolds was mounted on a 250 after encountering mechanical woes on his big-bore machine. Throughout the first laps, Norris and Huskey clashed, but Norris was unsuccessful in his attempts to fight past Huskey. Midway throu~h, however, Huskey bobbled corrung out of a corner, miraculously saving a near bail, but the damage was done, as Norris took advantage of this mishap for the lead. Norris went on to take the win by an impressive margin, while Huskey fought off Reynolds and Peugh to control second. Reynolds, who had worked up through the pack, lost third place to a determined Peugh on the last lap, as Peugh managed a tricky pass to lead Reynolds, Russell and Colton across the finish line. Miller Products/K&N Carl's CycleslTeam BRT-supported Reynolds discovered more success in the 250cc Expert main, controlling it wire-to-wire for an exciting win. Not [ar behind was Peugh, aboard the John Colton-tuned Kawasaki, who held off Russell and desert pro Ron Wehr, making his first Boise short track appearance on the Anderson Custom Applications/Smith Goggles/Rod Reynolds/Hi-Point Racing USA-modified CR250 Honda. Cycle Nuts 'n' Bolts-sponsored Pete Keller hammered his "Hondasaki" to the 125cc Expert main win ahead of Jamie Steelsmith, despite the Honda CRl25-mounted Steelsmith's best attempts to catch the rampaging Keller. Carroll cruises at Clifford MX By Thom Veety CLIFFORD, PA, JULY 5 Brian Carroll took his Kawasakis to a pair of moto wins in 125cc Expert action and a first and third in the 250cc Expert class at Hurricane Hills Sports Center. Yamaha-mounted Rob McCullough and Carroll hit the first turn in moto one together, and it was McCullough out first with the holeshot and early lead. But Carroll was not to be denied and was on the gas and around McCullough for the lead by the tart of lap three. Jimmy McIlvane held third ahead of Dennis Decker, Pete Hichens and Ray Desiderio. While Carroll and McCullough battled up front, there was another battle going on -for third between McIlvane and Hichens. They battled wheel-to-wheel with McIlvane holding his own until the halfway point 'when Hichens was able to take his new Suzuki into third and another battle with McCullough. Hichens won that battle also and took a second p\;ice finish behind Carroll who had built himself a good lead while the war went on behind him. Carroll smoked the pack to the first corner in moto two and worked on another good lead with McCullough safe in second and McIlvane and Hichens battling wheel-to-wheel for the entire eight lap moto. Mdlvane would jump a little farlher hut Hichens would be on the gas and catch right back up. Finally at the finish line jump Hicbens set up and passed McIlvane in the air [or the lead at the checkers [or third behind Carroll and McCullough. Tommy Haines took the holeshot in the first 250cc A moto with Carroll in second followed by Mdlvane, Bob Eichlin, mike Spear and Mike Twifold. Haines held the lead for three laps before Carroll was able to get around him for the lead. McIlvane still held third but Spear was in the groove and moved ahead of Eichlin with Twiford and McCullough battling for fifth. Spear continued to pour it on and was soon around McIlvane and Haines in second. Carroll had built a good lead and took the win with Spear finishi,ng 'second ahead of Haines, Twiford, Eichlin and Mdlvane. Moto two saw Twiford grab the early lead followed by Spear, Haines, McIlvane, Dave Echkbart and Carroll. Spear took over the lead on lap three and held on for the win and the overall.
