Kid Curry topped th e first H andicap h eat aboard his B&W Machine Shop special. Mark Day , riding th e LBC Leathers machin e , and Washington Sta te Champion Seth Church rounded out th e transfer sp o ts. Ingels won th e second h eat on h is A&A Services special, fini shing ahead o f Nick Geranio and Steve Crawford. National co ntende r T erry Poovey, who eventu a lly go t arou nd H al e to fin ish seco nd in th e short track, later held G raham at ba y to claim victory in the 'TT fin al. When the 16 Pro riders lined up for th e IO-Iap short tra ck main event, it looked a s if h eat race winner Poovey would be th e man to beat. T exan Poovey had not lost a short tra ck race at Boyd in more th an three years an d he wa s co n fident he could best both Graham a n d h eat tw o winner Alex j orgen sen. At th e gr een light, ho wever , it was Graham wh o wa s o ff th e line first, followed closely by 15-year-old Mike Hale, wh o wa s the 1986 H igh Point short tra ck rider at Boyd. , The part isan crowd went crazy whe n the yo u ng Texan stuck hi s fro nt wh eel under Gra ham go ing into tu rn th ree on la p two and took th e lead. Poovey, com ing off a poor star t, had wo rked h is way up 10 fourth. O n th e next lap, Graham. rid ing like he was in a Natio na l. took the lead from Hal e comi ng o u t of turn two , but Hal e used his Boyd Racewa y . experien ce to move under Graham in turns th ree and four. Eighteen riders qualified fo r th e 20-la p, $2500 TT final , in cludi ng j orgen sen, wh o edged Scott Adams in h eat one, Poovey, wh o topped th e seco nd hea t over runner-up G ary . Kidd, and G raham , wh o won th e third heat in front of Dave H ebb. Kidd grabbed th e holesh ot aboa rd his 600cc Honda, with jorgensen , Poovey an d Graham right behind. The four rider s immediatel y began pulling away from the field . The racing got tough on lap three when Graham got by Poovey to take over third in the infield and jorgensen passed Kidd for th e lead while powering onto the front straight. Poovey repassed Graham, worked his way past Kidd, th en took th e lead away from j orgensen on lap eight. At the halfway point he was four bike lengths ahead of jorg en sen a n d powering away. Graham , riding third, held th e edge over Kidd, Graham took secon d from jorgensen after th e midway point, a n d set out after Poovey, ch argin g hard in every turn in an attempt to wear Poovey down. But th e T exan, who was riding o ne of th e best TT races o f his career , p icked up th e pace and turned faster lap times in the closin g laps th an he had during th e first five laps. Poovey took the win b y four lengths over Graham, while jorge nsen settled for a comfortable third over Kidd. " I' m used to 25-lap main even ts and just ran out of laps," said Graham. . Scott Adams. 1 Sproull stops Bolton at lACR Drags By Bob Johnson PALMDAL E, CA , J UNE 21 When the new ly formed Internatio na l Mo to rcycl e Racing Associa tio n (IMRA), former ly Wine Country Racin g , staged the Kal-Gardl Delamo Sportsm an' Su m mer R eg io na ls a t L o s An g el es County Racewa y n ear Palmdale recentl y, race d irec tor Larry Pyle was confronted with a m in or problem, too many professional ra cers looking for an Eliminat or class in th e sportsman-oriented program. After tim e trials, a meeting wa s held with th e ap p ro p riate riders and a Top Pro Eliminator class wa s set up, using an 8.50 second index as a standard for the Pro Stock, Pro Fuel, and Funny Bike competitors. Tommy Bolton went to the final with the superior performing motor, cycle, but h e ran the Whitmore and Reed/Super Street Performance Suzuki Pro Stocker too quickly with an 8.39 second, 156.52 mph run on the 8.50 index to Ed Sproull's Long Beach, California based Harley at 9.30/1 50.225 for the win. Dave Earll was at the controls of his dad's Kawasaki in the Super Eliminator category as Don Earll was recovering from some aches suffered from a street bike fall. The . yo u n ge r Earll was confronted with a situation most drag ra cers probably have never en co untered. The person he wa s to stage against was his mother. Yes, Dave and Elva Earll were in th e fin al round of a IMRA points series even t, and Elva won the Eliminator on her Kawasaki, 10.25/ 128'.93 (10.17 dial-in , .476 reaction time) to Dave's losing 9.59/136.36 (9.48 d.i., .615 r.t. ), Ironically, th e event was held on Father's Day. I Other ra cin g included wins by Tor Webb on a Suzuki in Super Gas ( 10.50 in dex) at 10.62/ 103.92 to Aubrey Etan 's losing 10.96/124.65. Steve Kleinberg , a consistent winner during the weekly bracket programs at LACR, was a double winner , grabbing the Competition Eliminator title with a 11.47/118.42 (11.36 d ial- in ) over Tony Broussard's at 11.87/112.92 (11.67 d ial -in). Kleinberg also entered the Vance & Hines Suzuki in the E.T. pro~m where he beat Tom Erickson In the final 11.52/104 .65 (11.50 dial -in) to a losing 12.98/102.97 (12.883 dial-in ).
