By the 12th lap, Oliver was by Carter and into third place; Greene also got past Carter on la p 15 with Rayborn jamming past on lap 19. With the ambulance flags out and two ambulances on the track, the race turned into a two-rider duel between Ballington and Kocinski. Gordon Hedemark of San Ra fael, California, was the most seriously injured of the many 250cc crashers as he suffered ~ a spinal cord injury. On the exit of turn nine o n the ·12th lap, Ballington and Kocinski encountered problems. As the two went to pass a lapped rider, Ballin gton almost hit the hay bales. "I thoug ht he was going to take me to the bales," Ballin gton said. "He was out of control." . Kocinski took advantage of the incident to claim the lead. The two fought to th e last la p wi th Kocinski leadi ng across the stripe. Ballingt on powered past, however, before getting in trouble in the "Korkscrew." O liver was the un luckiest ri der of the day as his third place ride ended in tum eight when he crashed. "I hit a little bump and the front end tucked under," Oliver said. "I was taking it easy, maybe I was going too slow. It put my face right on the front disc." "It started running on one cylinder," Carter said after holding on for fifth place. " I was just comfortable following Kork , but I guess she (the Honda) didn't love me anymore. I haven't had much luck so far, but I'm sure we'll win one before the year 's over. I'll go home for two weeks , train and come back to try again." ''I'm happy with it (fourth place)," Rayborn said. "This year I want to learn and stay in the top five.
