Rick Knuth (2) tries to dive underneath Bart Schumlback. who went on to win the 500cc class at New Berlin Short Track. Norm Murphy borrowed a Kawasaki Superbike and came from behind to capture the victory at the Eastern Canada Challenge Series. Schmulback doubles New Berlin ST Schmidt aced both motos in co nvincing style and left the rest of the field to fight over the remains. Victor Paskus was also up to the challenge notching a 4-2 da y over Brad Nordlof (3-3) and th e rest of th e experienced field. David Berquist and Brian Cook both scored double wins in their classes. Berquist aced OUt Keith Herrman (2-2) and R ussel LeCompte to tak e th e the 80cc Junior c1asss. Cook styled hi s way to double wins in th e 80cc Seni or ra nks over J ohn Young Jr. (2-2) and Ri chard T om (3-3). There were dogfight battles in both of the B classes. T om Fosler was back in fourth in th e first mo to, but came back stro ng in th e last 125cc B moto to sna tch th e win o ver Darrin H ill (3-2) and Keith Petr i (2-3). In the 250cc B Ken Kota tka won th e first rn oto a nd Wade Warren won th e seco nd, but in th e final sta nding it was th e cons istent perfo rmance of Tim Filippi and his pair of seconds th at carried the o vera ll. Kotatka (13) held second over Warren (4-1). Results By Dave Hoenig N EW BER LI N, IL, J U NE 19 Heavy rains surrounded the Sangamon County Fairgrounds as Grayboy Pro motio ns held a Pro-Am short track during the fair. A ligh t shower delayed practice for an hour but when the track was ready it became very fast, . Bart Schmulbach took the lead in the 250cc class from Tom Sutton and led Sutton and Dan Carter to the checkered nag for his first win of the night, Schmulbach came right back in the 500cc class leadi ng from start to finish. The rea l race for second as Rich Knuth , Reed Bertolino a nd Kevin Sievers battled. The ac tio n was fast and furious on the tight tra ck as Knuth, Bertolino and Sievers followed Schmulbach to th e end. The 500cc Pro class was next out a nd it proved 10 be a heartbreak for Kansan Steve Mayfield. After winning both his qua lifying races his bik e wo u ldn't start for the final. Fifty-t hree-year-old T .e. Carter captured the overall victory in the Over-30 Novice class with a I-I score . Caner, the holesho t expert in his class, found hi s way to the first turn first in bo th motes, bu t it was not an easy win ' for Caner. H e was challenged in both rno tos, but held off any rider who came within striking di stance. Roger McCorker went 3-2 for second overall. Third went to Darrell Bishop who tallied a 2-3 score. jerry Hill won the Over-30 Intermediate class with a I-I score. Second went ' to Dwig ht Leatherwood who posted a 3-2 score. While Joe Comean finished third with a 2-6. . Over-30 Expert action saw J eff jones, former National number 882, tak e th e overall victory. Jones found himself near th e ba ck of th e pack around th e first turn in each moto, but rod e through, over, and around the field to ca p ture two moto victories. With on ly two . warm-up laps experi en ce o n the just-crashed Ninja, Murphy elected to park his norma l regional mount, a stock Kawasaki, and give the just-repaired Nelson mount a try in the fina l. Nelson had high-sided the Bellevill e Kawasaki/ Lyte Ra pid Trans it/CAM 2/WoIf Centra l Ontario Cycl e/ MR C/ Dunl op -spo nsored Kawasa ki on the last la p of the earlier Pro Open fina l, trying to pass for the lead. Nelson injured his wrist in th e fall, but crew chief Richar d J agoe repaired the factory -backed GPz, so Nelson gave it to his brother-in-law for the final. Suzuki GSXR750 R Superbikemo unted Derri ck Medaglia j umped into the lead from the start of the Fea ture, chased by the Pol isport/ Pirelfi/ Sh oei/Drospo/ Acme-backed Yamaha FZR 750R of previous round winner Tom Douglas, and Murphy. A first lap crash involving several riders including Bryce Do w ler , Michael Griffiths and Tim johnson allowed th e leading three to pull away. By lap seven of 15, Murphy was getting the hang of th e mean green Kawasaki and had moved past Douglas, and shortly th ereafter he picked off Medaglia for first, While Murphy pulled away to a small lead , Douglas tried all he kn ew to get by Medagl ia but didn't have th e horsepower in his stock, slick equipped Yamaha to get by th e modified Suzuki of Meda glia. At the check ered nag, Murphy gave Kaw asaki th eir first feature win sin ce Rueben McMurter grabbed a National back in 1984, with Medaglia seco nd and Douglas third.
