Seivers and two other . riders failed to make the restart. On the restart , it was Reed Bertilino that took the top spot at ' the checkers ov er Knuth and Bart Schmulbach. Bast blasts Baylands Speedway By Bill Spencer 44 FREMONT, CA, JUNE 25 Bart Bast and Eddie Ingels came away with the victories in the Handicap and Scratch mains, respectively, in Thursday night's Class A speedway action at Baylands Raceway Park. In the Handicap heat race action Bobby Hicks, Jeff Kniss , Mike Solis and Ingels took wins, while Hicks and Ingels took semi wins. Van ce Feli cio, riding in his first Division One program, grabbed the early lead and held it for four laps in the Handicap main, while the rest of the troops battled among themselves. Ingels got stuck behind Solis and Joe Leduc for a lap, but even tually worked his way by. Bast made the best move of the night as he snaked by Ingels and Felicio late in the race and took the win by a bike length. In the Scratch main event it was . Steve Martin who got the earl y lead with Ingels, Jim Sisemore and Bast in tow. As Martin finished the second lap he pulled out with a lame motor and Bast moved up to take over the lead aft er a good pass on Ingels and Sisemore. When the white flag came out Bast suddenly slowed and handed the lead and the win to Ingels. Scott Yarbrough came through in the Division Two main holding off Kerry Puccio and Brian Pecore in a thrilling' finish. In the Division Three ranks Matt Vulk put on a good show and recorded th e win ah ead of Bryan Barret, Brad Spencer and Chris Rudy. Pittman grabs Portland RR cash By Phillip J. Campagna PORTLAND, OR, JUNE 21 Bellevue Suzuki-sponsored Joe Pittman won the 750cc Stock Production class on his Suzuki GSXR750 in the highlighted OMRRA Suzuki GSXR Nat ional Championship Series race at Portland International Raceway. Smokin' Joe seemed to be having problems with Dunlop-sponsored New Zealander lain Pero in the first heat of 750cc Production. It started out to be a classi c battle between Oregon Motorcycle Road Racing Association's number one plate Keith Pinkstaff and Pittman when the two took an early lead. Pittman and Pero then pulled ahead of Pinkstaff on the third lap. It didn't take long for Pero to grab the lead, building a substantial lead. All Pittman and Pinkstaff could do was watch Pero pull away to a . l O-second win. Pero was definitely a big threat to Pittman and Pinkstff, and he took home a major chunk of the Suzuki money. With this not being a Honda contingency date, Pittman and Pinkstff would have to pull it . together in the second heat. When the green flag dropped, the three were out in front. When the dust settled, Pittman and Pinkstaff put Pero back in his place by taking first and second. Pero knew the second heat was not going to be as easy as the first heat with Pittman and Pinkstaff having the " home track advantage. " In Formula One action, Insulate Industries /Highlin e Suzukisponsored Australian Craig Trinder rolled up to the grid on a stock Suzuki GSXRIIOO, the same bike he pilots in th e Open Production class. This seemed to be an interesting weapon choice matched to the fullypumped Suzuki Zlock Ra cing machines of Dan and Dale Zlock. Trinder gained the lead on his quiet 1100 as the Zlocks roared behind. Brazilian MX Champion, Rodriey Smith visited his hometown of Antioch and won all four motos in the 125cc and 250cc classes. Smith said, "I came home for a week to visit family and friends, renew my visa and race at my favorite track Sandhill Ranch". In th e 125cc Pro class , Smith-got the holeshot over Russ Scott and Danny Paladino. Terry Bostard came from behind to pass Scott and Paladino moving into second. While Smith and Bostard diced it out, Talon Vohland showed up in third aft er Paladino lost it in the back of the track. In the second moto, Paladino got the holeshotover Scott and Vohland. Smith moved to first in the second lap with Vohland pushing hard the whole moto. Bostard worked the pack and moved to third over Paladino on the checkered. Not to be out done, the 250cc Pro class had as much excitement with Smith holeshotting after Kelly Andris moved into second over Eric Sandstrom. A three-way battle , ensued between Sandstrom, Clayton Blood and Talon Vohland. The positions held for three laps with Sandstrom the victor for third over Blood and Vohland. The second moto of the 250cc found Smith taking the lead o££the gate with Andris a close second. Vohland moved into third and passed Andris to hold the second place position. Knight, riding a Can-Am, made a great recovery and finished second at the checkered flag . ;. In th e main event, Armando Alvernaz, on a Kawasaki, shot off th e line and into the lead with Knight right on his heels. It started off with Mark Key getting the holeshot on his well tuned Harley-Davidson. Numberone plate rider, Bob Damron, got off the lin e in third on a Rotax, with Ken Netto in fourth on a Can-Am followed by John Taylor in fifth 011 a Rotax. Hoffman went under Key coming out of turn four in the second lap. ,'" Just after the halfway point, and again in turn four, Damron passed Key but went into a slide and went down in front of Key who tried to get around him; but also went down when his front tire clipped Damron's back wheel.
