Gr ess turned in a come-fro m -behi nd ride for a thir d in moto one, th en backe d th at up with a second mota victo ry. Gress met Ken Arndt in th e 125cc Novice race and brought som e drama to th at race. Arn d t led all of mot a one with Gr ess reall y hammering at him. Gress mad e a valiant try at passin g near th e start of th e fourth lap a nd cras hed hard. By th e tim e he recovered, he was nearly in last pl ace. Gress fou ght his way back to th ird and was righ t behind Dannon Burg by th e end of the mot a. Gress ca me off th e lin e ahead of Arn d t in moto two, but th ey were both beh ind Burg. Gr ess managed to pass Burg for the lead ab out midrace, but Arn d t was locked in third. That fini sh gave Gress th e overa ll, with Burg second a nd Arndt thi rd. Bubba Erickson had an in sp ired ride in the l25cc Interm edia te class taki ng both rnotos and the overa ll. In moto o ne, Erickson took th e lead away fro m th e 250s for the overall moto win. In th e 250cc Novice Pete Baeza took the moto on e hol eshot and held the lead all th e way fo r th e w in. Adam Pontiou s was in th e midd le of all fou r classes at th e sta rt of both mot os, but he steadily moved up and too k second in rn oto o ne. In mo to two, Baeza got stuck in th e back of th e pack a nd Pontiou s took th e mo to win a nd th e overa ll. Len Se llers had littl e diffi culty cap turi ng both motos of the 250cc Beginner class. T om Sm ith was qu ickest off th e line in both motos of th e 500cc Novice race, but faded by th e fin ish to get two seco n ds a n d seco nd overall. David DeL an g passed Smith in th e middle of th e first lap and held the lead to win mot a one. DeLang again waited until th e end of th e first lap of mota two to tak e th e lead . Wh en ' he did, it was with a styling midair pass over the fini sh lin e jump. DeLang was the overa ll winner with two firsts. Horton hot at Stoneyhollow MX By James Hundley DAYTON, OH, J UNE 21 H onda-m ounted J ami e Ho rton blasted th e compe titio n with four wins in a row to take top honors in the 125 and 250cc B cla sses in ro und two of the Budw eiser/ Stoneyholl ow MX Series at the Dayton M.e. club gro unds. In the first l 25cc B mota , Ray Todorov go t th e hol esho t foll o wed by H or ton , Brian Cu ster a nd Blane Ar mb rus ter. H o rton a n d Cust er quickly passed T odorov on the firs t lap and gai ned a sizable lead. T wo battl es ensued as H orton and Custer diced for fir st and T od orov and Armbruster fought for third. Cu ster sha do wed H orton to th e checkered £lag, wh ile Armbr uste r and Todorov came in a distant third and fourth, respecti vely. H orton holesho t th e second mot a, followed by Cu ster and Steven Lawrence. The moto was red £lagged after a major pil eup occurred over a large jump. The restart sho wed H orton with the hol eshot again, followed by La wren ce an d Gregory Webber . Cus ter zipped through th e pack to second after one lap. Custer tailed H orton for four laps waiting for a mi stake tha t never came. After a bad start, Arm brus ter fought hi s way back to a nother third. T he mota fini sh a nd ove ra ll read H orton, Custer and Armbrus ter. The first 250cc B mota saw H orton with th e holesh ot , followed by J am es Branblett, Rodger Marl ow and J ohn Wheeler. H orton blasted to a huge lead with th e real battles left for second, third and fourth. Wheeler passed Marl ow over a set of jumps at the end of the first lap, foll owed by J effrey Davis. H orton won , ,followed by Branblett , Wh eeler, Davis and Marlow. Hanson hauls at Gillette MX By Mary Hanson GILLElTE, WY, J UNE 21 T o assu re prem ium racing, The Bord erline Racing Association regrouped its cla sses into three major divisi ons and treat ed th e Gillette, Wyoming fan s to an action-packed da y of racing. Danny Hanson came o u t to be one of th e day's big winners, taking hom e the Outlaw /Open Pro honors. I H onda-m ounted Randy Stahla led the Outlaw/Open Pro class into turn o ne of the first mota. Clint Overman, J ay Will and H anson foll owed in hot pursuit. During lap one, H anson made hi s move and stormed past Will to assume th e third pl ace .position. H anson th en set hi s sights on Stahla, wh o O verman had bumped into second. On lap three, Hanson was fin all y abl e to gas aro und Stahla and cha rge after Overman. After pr essing Overman th rough out most of the mota , H anson was fin ally able to slip past th e Yam aha p ilo t. As th e two riders co ntin ue d to dice, lapped riders becam e so mewha t of a problem, slo win g down both o f th e leaders, but it definitely made for a mu ch more inte resting race. Overman 's pr essure finall y took it's toll on Hanson and Overman went around. Though Hanson tri ed to keep Overman in sigh t, he was unabl e to, so H anson had to settle for second, behind Overm an. _ , At th e start of th e second mota, Stahla o nce again stole the holeshot, with Overman; Hanson a nd Will directl y behind. Hanson made hi s move earlier in th is mota than he did in th e first and in stantly began pushing Overman. After a short battle, Hanson found it line aro und Overman and took off after Stahla. Hanson kept ap p lying the pressu re, but Stahla wasn 't going to make it easy for th e Kawasaki rider. Hanson contin ued his stru ggle, but hit Stahla in th e process and lost gro u n d; making it just that much more difficult for him to catch up. Hanson than kicked it into high gear and sailed past Stahla for the lead. As Hanson started pulling away, Will quickl y started gaining ground _ on Stahla and the war began for seco n d . Even though Will wa s unabl e to make a pass on Stahla, th e two rid ers definitely put in th e best ride of th e mot a and mos t cer tain ly had th e fastest lap tim es.
