World Championship 2S0cc MX Series: Round 6 Herring jams to Yugo GP win JASTREBARS KO , YUGOSLAVIA, JUNE 21 Rep resentin g Great Britain, German ri der Rob H e rr i n g became th e youngest rider in history ever to win a 250cc G P , and he did it in styl e by sweeping both motos. H erring, riding a Yamaha, made the best o f a wet and dreary day in Jastr ebarsko, to edge Sweden's Jorgen Nils so n and Italy 's Mic hele Rin al d i in the overall stan dings. The first moto started ou t in Herrin g 's favor as he blasted into the lead, while th e ignition in Swedish rider Peter Hansson's KT M quit working on th e sta rt in g lin e. Near the back of th e pack wa s curren t points leader from Fin lan d Pekka Vehkonen w ho clipped a hole in th e track with his Cagiva's fro nt wheel and cras hed over th e handlebars. Veh ko n en eventua lly remo unted with ben t handlebars, which h e had to change during th e race pretty much putti ng him out of the ra ce. As th e m ot o progressed, Herring open ed up a comfortable lead, while Ital y ' s Michel e Fanton a n d hi s Yamaha began reel i n ~-i n Su zu ki ri der Michele Rinaldi , who was pacing in second. At the l l-rninu te mark o f the 45-m inu te rnoto, Fanto n b lew by Rin aldi for second. After passi ng Brita i n 's Jeremy Wha tl ey a n d Wes t G e rm a ny 's Ro la n d D ie p ol d , Erik Geboers charged his Honda af ter fourth place Nil sso n. Wi th a few laps remaining in th e m o to, th e two ri ders swapped pos itions w i th Nilsson ed g i n g Geboers. Herr in g too k th e win 20 seconds over Fa nton , then followed Rinaldi, Nil sson an d Geboers. The seco nd rnoto saw Whatley taking th e holeshot bu t was p assed by Rin aldi and N ilsson in the first tu rn. Herring was n ip p in g a t Whatley's rea r tire. Shortly after, N ilsson slipped past the leader Rinal di, while Herring moved 'u p and displaced R in al d i as well. H err ing slo wly closed in on Ni lsson, a nd at the h a lfway p oint, Herr in g sn uc k by Nilsson o n an uphill section. itaking over th e lead .
