Four laps into ' th e race, Ryan, H oll and and Schmit were side-byside, battling for the lead, while Brooks foll owed a few seconds behind after passing Leisk through a double jump section that Lei sk would not double. . Up from, the dogfight betw een Ryan, H olland and Schmit got even hotter. After eig ht m inutes of ra cing, Holland flew alongside Ryan off a fast drop-off jump then outdragged Ryan to the next left-hand turn . A few corners later, Schmit also decided to make a move on Ryan . Schmit dove hi s Suzuki inside of Ryan's Honda in a turn, but Ryan fough t back and kept his second place position. H olland , m eanwhil e, h ad extended hi s lead over Ryan and Sch mit, but hi s Suzuki began slow in g . Acco rd i ng to H oll and ' s mechanic , th e govern o r gear had sp un o n th e cra n k, ca using th e motor's po wer-valve to malfunction. " T he valve wasn't working a t all," said H oll and. " When I was in second I caugh t Ryan and it started act ing funny a little bit. I passed him and it wasn 't running too bad , but once I stre tched out a little bit of a lead , it was ge tting so bad I would land o££ the jumps and would hav e no power at all, so I co uld n 't j ump anythi ng. It was .really hard to ride, . so I just had to pull over. It wouldn't rev o££ th e bottom, but at h igher rpms it wou ld rev. I thought I had it (the wi n) in th e bag, but you never . kn o w." I H oll and began falling o££ th e pa ce on his cripp led Suzuki, wh ile Ryan retook the lead with Schmit second. Fourteen minutes into th e race, Schmit was breathing heavily down Ryan's back, while Brooks was trying to keep Dym ond at bay in third. After Dymond pursued Leisk, Holland, Honda-mounted Fr ed Andrews , O'Neal USA/Arai H elm ets/Oakley-backed Kehoe and DeHoop. A few turns later, Dymond shot passed Brooks, as did Leisk. But Brooks, a straightaway later , doubled by Leisk and back into fourth. J ust over 20 minutes into th e moto (n ine laps), Schmit slipped aro und Ryan for the lead , and a few turns later Dymond also displaced R yan. At th is point, all eyes were focu sed o n Sch mi t and Dym ond wh o were di cing for the lead. A few seconds back chased Brooks, Ryan , Leis k, Kehoe, Yam aha rider Sha u n Kal os, Del-loop, Andrews a nd Coo per. Two laps from th e fini sh , Schmit still led Dym ond. Schmit was p icking up time on Dym ond th rough th e tight sections, but Dym ond wo u ld . ca tch back up over the jumps. Just after 30 minutes of raci ng , the .two leaders headed into a tri cky fourjump, double-jump section . It was here where Schmit doubled th e first set of jumps but sudde n ly h it th e br ak es a nd singl ed th e last two j umps, which he had been doubling all moto, This was all Dym ond needed to fly into th e lead . " I came up to the j ump," sai d Schm it, " but I was in the wrong gear, so I decided not to do it. You co uld bar ely make it in th e right gea r, so I backed off." Dymond went o n to take the win over Sch mi t, Brooks, Kehoe, Leisk, Ryan , DeH oop, Andr ews and Kalos. Head in g the pack in to th e first turn at th e start of the second moto was Malcolm Sm i th / Pro Circu it sponsored Cooper, wh o was chased by H oll and, Leisk , Schmit , Brooks, Kawasaki 's Eddi e Warren , DeHoop and Dymond. The end of the first la p had Cooper still holding th e lead but Holland was' searching for a smoo th line around th e Stillwater, Oklahomabased rider. But hot on Holland's rear fender was Leisk, who stuffed by the Suzuki rider and into second place. Holland stayed tough and set aft er Leisk but crashed; he landed a little short over a double jump and was pitched high into th e air and over the handlebars. Holland staggered back to hi s Suzuki and pi cked back up in 10th. Holland's crash gave Leisk clear' sail ing after Cooper, and just aft er five minutes of racing, Leisk had sn uck by Cooper and im mediately started pulling away. Also on the move was Dymond, who was pressuring Warren for fou rth. Shortly a fte r a n d durin g just o ne lap , Dymon d had mo tored past Warren and Schmit, a nd was closin g in on Cooper, who was suffering a bad headache a fter he, too , cras hed over a double jump in practice. At th e halfway poin t, Dymond took a clea r lin e around Cooper and found him self seven seconds behind th e leader, Leisk. It was al so at this tim e wh en the rains began to lightl y fall. H eading into th e 20-m inute mark, Leisk still maintain ed his adva n tag e over Dymond, wh o had pulled away from Cooper, Kehoe, Schmi t, Brook s, Warren , Tyson Vohland, DeHoop, Andrews and H oll and. Sho rt ly after , Cooper dropped back o ne more pos itio n wh en Kehoe roo sted by, tak in g over th ird. Back in fifth , Sch mit was keeping busy fendi ng o££ Brooks. With almost 10 minutes left in th e rn oto , Leisk was still in com ma nd and was handling the ra in with ease. Dymond, Kehoe and Brooks were fairl y sprea d ou t, then .came a tight battle between Cooper, Brooks and Schmit, wh ich lasted right down to th e fini sh, until Schmit got crossed up in som e deep ruts and crashed. The Suzuki rider , however, regrouped quickly enough and did not lose a position. Leisk was on the gas and there was nothing Dymond could do about it. Although Dymond couldn't reel -in Leisk in th e rain, he did know that his second-place position would sew up the overall. So Dymond let Leisk go to take th e win, tak ing the overall with his seco nd place. Third went to Kehoe follow ed by Cooper, Brooks, Schmit, Holland, Vohland, Andrews and DeHoop. • Results 125 : 1.
