Helpful desert racers In th e tim e we hav e spent racing in th e desert and in th e two vear s since we began co vering desert racing for Cycl e News we have alwa ys found desert racers to be unfailingl y helpful a nd friendl y. But th eir helpfulness was never more a p p recia ted than last weeke nd at th e So. Cal. /Desert M.C. Dual European Scrambles. On our way ho me from the ra ce late Sunday afternoon , we blew both tires on the right rear of our m otorhome a n d found o urselves stran ded on the sid e of th e h igh way. 20 mi les outside of Victorville, more than th ree ho u rs from home. We were rescu ed by members o f o ur desert club, So . Cal. M.C.. who p u lled over as soon as th ey saw other club me mb ers in tro ub le, Before long there were 12 club vehicles parked on th e side of th e road. th e motorhome was up on blocks, and th e b lown tir es wer e o n th eir way back to town for repairs. Club members even did th eir best to lighten the load on the remaining tire by emptying all the beer out of the motorhorne's refrigerator. We o we our club a big thank you for all their hel p , and at the next race , guys, the Coronas are on us . TOM& ANNE VAN BEVERE N Simi Valley, CA Living li f e t o its fullest I'm writing in regard to the letter from Cy nt hia H i g g in s which appeared in issue #24. In th e letter she suggests that I ran into the back wheel of Mart y Siegel's bike and ca used th e su bsequent chai n o f events at Will ow Spring that resu lte d in Marty' s death. The fact is th at Siegel lost hi s fro nt en d whi le br akin g deep into turn o ne . T here was pl enty of space between us a nd I sq uared up th e tu rn a nd missed h im completely. While in the process of doing just that I was hit by a nother rider from beh ind, causing both o f us to go down which resu lted in a three bike crash. I'm not b laming anyone; it 's part of ra cing. I just felt I had to write and set th e record stra igh t before so meo ne else wrote in who didn 't have alI the facts and told their story. Like I said, it 's alI part of racing. After I recover from my injuries I'll be right back out there doing what I love most racin g motorcycles. We know th e risks. Ma ybe that's why we love ra cing so much and that's exactly what Marty Siegel wa s doing, what he loved and living life to its ful lest, Godspeed, Marty, STEVE CA RDILLO Long Beach , CA Let Han nah sh ow 'em Like a reader whose letter yo u recent ly printed, I too wou ld lik e to see the motocros sers o f America send Bob Hannah to Un adilla to co m pe te in th e 1987 Motocross des National s. Bob is a remarkable individual and he has sh own exce llen t spee d on th e U na d illa ci rcui t. In th e ea rl ier part of his career, Bob set th e standard that has a llowed Am eri ca to produce tal ent good en ou gh 10 bring home team World Championships. Let's lei Bob sho w 'em how to do it at hom e. BILL CA RMEAN Springfield, IL Cheers for Senat or Dornan After writing each of th e 57 members of th e subcommittees for S 7 and H R 371. th e en closed rep ly from U.S. Congressman Rob ert K. Dom a n (R-Ca lifo rn ia) is the first rep ly I've received that takes a sta nd in our favor. All o thers, so far. ar e undecided. Let's a ll ta ke th e ti me to wr ite Congress ma n Do rn a n a nd than k h im for h avin g th e guts to stand up for us , instead of waiti ng to see who has th e most votes for him, like Senator Pete Wilson. May be OUT pal Bob wi ll spread th e word about all the support h e has. TERESA TETREAULT Legi sla tive O fficer Spokebenders M.C. Cypress, CA Thank you for your recent leuer regarding Senator Cranston's bi ll . S 7 , the Ca lifornia Desert Pro tectio n Act, a nd its H o use counterpart, H R 371. It was good to hear from you. As I am sure you k now, the Cransto n bill wou ld close 9.5 mi llion acres of Ca lifornia desert and forest la nds to p ublic use. The affected areas currently provide recreation for th ousa nds of Ca lifornians an d o the rs and to prohibit th e use of th ese lands by th e public is, I bel ieve, wrong. Cali fornia is blessed wi th a wide variety of wi lderness areas that are a trea sure to th e sta te. As long as th ese areas are treat ed with respect a n d reverence, th ey shou ld be open to a ll to enjoy. I will therefore oppose H R 371. Than ks again for taking the ti me to sha re your views wit h me . I appreciate your input and loo k forward to hearing fro m yo u again. ROB ERT K. DORNAN U.S . Congressman 30 1 Cannon H ouse O ffice Building Was hington, DC 20515 Off-Road schoo l On Saturday, June20, Harden OffRo ad he ld a class just south of T ecate, Mexico. I attended that class and thought you might apprecia te the opinion of Joe Average R ider, Scot Harden has been one of o ur heroes for a lo ng time and h e understands what got him there. And while I don't expect to bang bars in Baja with him I do thi nk h is school is good for m y objective wh ich is to enjoy dirt bikes for a long time to come. We h ad a rea lly good grou p down there, fro m A en duro rider Perr y Jasper a nd th ree-wheeler ace J effery T h roop to a lady nam ed Karen w ho was a true beginner with m uch to gain, and I'm certa in she did gain from Scot's lessons a nd advice. T ecate offers some of the best riding anywhere. Add to that Scot Harden teaching you, advising you, filming you and helping you set up yo u r m otorcycle a ll add up to a good day in school. We also go t to m ee Scot's p retty wife Christ y who sup lied one of the best parts of the cl ass a barbecue ch icken lunch fit forchampion. I recommend that the next tim yo u think yo u need to spend rnoneon yo ur m otorcycle, consider usin it to fix tha t nut on the handlebars Fo r me it was $100 well spent. Scot and Christy ar e really n ic people to be with , I'd like to than them for th e lessons, the lunch an th e freebi es from Scot's sponsors. JIM A. P OO San Marcos, P .S. T ha n ks, R.]. . for an unforgeuab1e evening! It was a classic. Congratulations also to Guy Cooper o n a grea t a nd g u tsy ride under what had to be the to ughest of conditions. Testify on De sert Bill The dreaded S7 desert " Wildern ess" bill of Alan Cranston's will come up for its first Senate test j uly 2 1 and 23. A h ea rin g o u tcome on S7 will dictate whether the bill goes on to the other committees, the Senat floor or die. T estifyin g before th is co m mittee is a ll but impossible a t this time. In fact our well prepared adversaries are a lready stac ki ng testimony against th e public land use rs with en vironmental pro-57 spokesmen. But all is n ot lost, not by a ny means. Written ' tes tim o ny' mu st b acce p ted by th e co m mi ttee with th e .sa me co nsi deration as oral testim· o ny. As yo u know, S7 proposes to close o r severely restrict public land use in an area o f California representing over 50,000 sq uare m il es larger than the la nd mass in 25 of our states. The use r, social recreational and econo m ic job im pact potential is phenomenal. P lea se write to the co m mittee chairman and voice your objection to S7. If yo u have a business in the industry, note the job impact a n have everyone sign the letter. Get your friends and neighbors and fellow riders to write. Rem ember, this di rectly affects street ri ders an dirt riders a like. Write to: The H o no rab le Dal e Bu m p ers.
