Iielsen and Bertram tied agai n in th e 500cc class, while Dan Smi th, on ce again. was to p Four-Stroke. H yde contin ued to burn th e tra il s in the 125cc class with th e fa stest sco re, to pping Hon da -m o u nted riders T az Harvey and Mill er. Drew Smi th ma in tained h is u ppe rhand in th e Li gh tweight Fo u r-Stroke class. After ri ding more th an 120 miles th ro ugh four loops, th e las! three m iles fea tu red the final special test of th e day, one o f th e to ughest specia l tests o f the wee kend. T he narr ow, somewha t muddy a nd rocky trai l zig. zagged through the den se forest. an d it was 125cc ri der Donnie Simon e surp rising everyone with th e fastest tim e at 365 seco nds. Second best time was H aak er 's 369 score followed by Nielsen 's 372 an d Roeseler 's 377. Ha lcom b fini shed three seco nds off Roeseler's pace. O vera ll scores after th e first day , however, favored Halcomb who led Roeseler by five seco nds, 1099-1104. Next came Haaker a t 1111, followed by Nielsen (1112), Bertram (1123), Dan Smith ( 113 1), Drew Sm ith ( 1132) and H yde (1139). Day Two J eff Irwin, riding a Husky in the big-bore Four-Stroke class, began day two on a so ur no te wh en his mot orcycle di d n 't fire within h is start m inute and he dropped 60 pe nalty poi nts. " Actu a lly, I lost a wa ter p ump seal early yesterday; th e bi ke started running really hot, so it lost some com p ressio n. I carried a litt le containe r with me because water was dripping from the b ike reall y fast. I co u ld go about four o r five m iles, stop a t all th e creeks and put wat er in it. I replaced the seal this morning, but it wouldn 't start within my minute.
