The H o ll ister Hills, California stop is Ro u nd 9 in th e Series; and the circuit has already passed through Belgium, Portugal, England , "H o ll a n d , Cz echoslovakia , Yugoslavia, San Marino, and France. With Argentina, and Sweden - th e points chase is heating up toward th e crowning of a new 1987 250cc World Motocross Champion. AMERICANS VS. To date, the results of th e first seven rou nds of international 250cc competition are in: Joergen Nilsson took th e win in the opening race in Belgium for H o nda, and th e Yugoslavian round went to 18-year-old South Afr ican, Rob H err ing , for Yamaha. But the real battle has been between Cagiva's Pekka Vehkonen, who took Portugal, England, and Sa n Marin o ; a n d Honda 's Eri c Geboers who took overall honors in H olland and Czechlovakia. Onl y six points se pa ra te the leader, Veh konen , from runner-up Geboers. Neither Vehkonen nor Geboers has ever laid claim to th e 250cc World title, yet both have worn the 125cc crown . Curle y-headed Geboers ; known as "The Kid," was th e 125cc back-to-hack World Champ in 1982 and 1983. A favorite of the Finnish fans, Pekka Vehkonen won the 125cc Championship in 1985 after having only raced three years as a professional. Following his I25cc wins , Geboers moved to the 500cc class where he ne tt ed a fo urth -place overall in 1984; a n d th ird-p lace finishes in '85 a nd '86. Vehkonen los t his crown to Du tchman Da vey Strijbos last yea r. Bo th Ge boers and Veh konen have switched to th e 250cc class this season - and wi th defending 250cc Champion, J acky Vimond out of the run ning with back injuries, both are h ungry Ior the title! On the home fro nt, the Americsans are just as determ ined to conquer the Europeans at Hollister Hills! Our National heroes have been victorious a t th e 500cc event in Carlsbad, and will be out to prove th emselves as th e better 250cc riders again o n Jul y 19th. H onda 's Ri ck Johnson, wh o beat th e Eu ro peans a t Carlsbad in '86, and wh o has claimed th e 250cc Nati onal Championship for two yea rs running, feels he can do it again a t H ollister. But J ohnson 's two strongest co ntenders are hi s fellow Ameri can aces, T eam Suzuki 's Bob " H u rr ica ne " Hannah and J ohnny O 'Mara. Hannah won last yea r's 250cc race in Unadilla when O 'Mara, wh o was leading, ran o ut of gas l After the rac e, Hannah handed O 'Mara his gas tank; a nd yo u can bet O'Mara won 't let that happen to him again!
