L awson won the twice rain -delayed 57th Dutch TT at Assen, beating Rothm an s Honda's Wayne Gardner by 6.67 seconds 12 with Team Lucky Strike I Roberts' Randy Ma mo la third. Ron H aslam was fifth. Mamola in th e Gardner now leads " World Championship points race 85 to 66 with Lawson third at 64.. T he 500cc race was waved off at 3:00 p. m., but was stopped by ra in after one lap since most .riders had go ne ou t on slicks . Forty-five minutes later, the field was sent off a . second time, again with mos t on slicks. But on the sixt h la p as a steady drizzle increased. th e top th ree riders. Ga rd ner, L a wson and H a sla m , decided it was unsafe to contin ue and pulled into the p its. With five laps co mp leted. race officials decided that final scoring wou ld be don e o n th e co mbi ned times with the second part of the race ru nning ~5 laps to give a co mp lete Grand Pnx of 20 laps. Grid order for th e second portio n of the ra ce was decided by finishing posi tio n in th e first part and everyone was on some combination of wet-weather tires. With Gardner. Lawson and H aslam all finishi ng the first five lap s wit hi n half a second of each o ther. the second part of th e race prom ised to be intense. But Marn ola, who fin ished in eig h th pl ace so me 13.5 seconds back. an d was gi ven li ttle cha nce. tri ed hi s best to prove everyo ne wro ng. H e sped away from the start of the second race and was leading Lawson by abo ut 20 seconds . when wit h six laps to go he overshot turn o ne, allowing Lawson to take the lead. Mamo la wou ld nip Lawson at the line for the win in the second part wit h Gard ner a safe third and McEInea matching his first race fo urth. Whe n the times were com p u ted it was Lawson, G ardner. then Mam ola, 12.99 behind La wso n, and McEl riea about three and a half seconds bac k, but 22 seconds up o n H aslam . German ace Anton Man g became th winnin gest rider in 250cc history, cap turing his 28th career win to' surpass P hil Read with whom he was tied. In hi s fourth win of th e seaso n. the 37-year-old Man g came from 12th ' on th e first of 18 laps to beat HB_ 1 Ro mer 's Rei n h old Ro th by 6.45 seconds and mo ve int o a tie with him at th e top of th e poin t sta ndings wi th 67. After qualifying second behind, World Champi on Carlos Lavadoll (2:18.65 to 2:19.08), Mang proved h would be the one to beat wh en early in th e race , whi le running th ird, hesha ttered Marti n Wimm er's o ne-j , year-old lap record of 2:19.07 wi tli;; a tim e of 2:17.75. By th e eig ht h la p , Man g was in the lead and the order I of th e top four wo ul d n' t cha nge to the end. Foll owing Mang, Roth. Pons. an d Carl os Car dus was . aI quartet th at all finis hed on th e same second. Led by Wimmer. ridi ng with a still injured left foot . were Ivan Pal azzese, J acques Cornu. and J uan Ga rriga. Patrick Igoa was n inth with Lavado dropping back to 10th afte~ bein g fifth for the first two laps. Garelli's Fausto Gresin i kept hi s perfect record in the 125cc class.... winning for th e fifth consecutive ' time. This race was his most difficult yet wit h teammate Bruno Casanova fighting h im for the di stance on ly to get beat by 0.29 seconds. Thirdu by mo re th an 33 seconds was Moto AGV 's Paolo Casoli. With 75 po ints, Gresini leads Casanova by 19 in the cham pio nship race wi th Au gu st Auinger , fou rth today. third with 42. . The 80cc race ran for 12 laps over th e 3.8 l2-mile Van Drenthe circuit' and Wor ld Champion Derbi ride; J orge Martinez led everyone of them. At th e fin ish of th e 45.74-mi le ra ce. th e Spaniard had put 22.41 seconds between him self a n d teammat e: Manuel H erreros, Third, a seco nd behind H err eros, was Krauser Racing's Stefan Doerfli n ger.
