Dr. David Kieffer got the better of a race-long duel with John Long to finish tltird. Thomas Shat'P rode his American Thunder Harley-Davidson to the Modified Production class win over Ducati-mounted Clnis Helland and Moto-Guzzi-mounted Rlain Paulus JI'. "It was a little wet out there," Adamo said. "I just' watched a little to see the spray off Brauneck and Church's wheels. I came up, got 'em and pulled away." The l4-lap. 50-mile final saw Harley-Davidson's Gene Church powering off the line first and winning the drag race to llIrn one. When the pack came around to "nd the first circuit. however. it was Brauneck with an impressive lead over Adamo, Church, Kieffer, Long and Helland. By the end of the second lap, Brauneck led by almost ~hree seconds, appearing as if he would walk away with this·OIie. The track started to dry, the rain quit falling and suddenly by lap· three, Adamo was back in business. When the pack ended lap four, the General Engineering/Michelinl Arai/Sinisalo/Gio_ Ca. Moto U Asponsored rider had his Ducati in' front. Church, meanwhile, was a distant third, leading- by almost a second and a half over the dueling Long and KIeffer. The Modified pack was a tight ballle between Paulus, Helland, and Dougla Gro s on his Oucati Paso. By the halfway mark, Adamo was way ahead of Brauneck with Church, Long and Kieffer tightly knit, and owr 30 semnds behind. Chlll'ch went low on the front _ straight with mechanical problems on lap I\ine, allowing Long and Kieffer to blast past. On lap I I, Gross crashed the Paso in turn 10. On the final lap, Adamo held a comfonable lead over Brauneck with Long and Kieffer still ballling. At the nag it was Kieffer after stuffing it under Long in turn 10. . Brauneck's second place keeps him in the poinl lead. but only by "one measly point." "I knew il would have to be going into 10," Kieffer said of lhe pass on Long. Stevens followed Polen feast ChivingtOn and by the . tI d f ume e pack crosse the stanl inish line for the first time, the leading duo were already clear· of the pack. Renfrow led a Nordby, Kevin Ren lZell , Doug Tosten battle for fourth across the line at the end of lap one. Renfrow, the cagey veteran, w.~s soon o~ Chivington and using hlS low-welght advantage to draft past on the stralghtaway. Polen and Stevens stayed close for six laps, and then Polen turned up the burners to pull away. Meanwhile, Nordby had joined in the Renfrow/Chivington fracas, making it a three-way grapple to the flag. Rentzell's race came to an end as he pulled into the pits with mechanical ills on the sixth lap. The battle for third was the one to watch as the trio exchanged the position numerous times per lap. Polen wa turning in times in the • high 49, low 50 range while the thirdplace battle was circulating in the 52s. At the finish it wa's Renfrow snatching third from Nordby with Chivington a close fifth. "It was a good race; a lot of fun," Renfrow said. "The bikes are real even. It's a good class. My low weight helps a lot on acceleration. I'm still disgusted with finishing third in the 250cc heat." "I kind of got tired and he got a lillle ahead of me,".
