Mathews escaped with the win, one bike length ahead of Ethridge. Matt Brake led the first 125cc B moto followed closely by Todd Neal. At the end of the first lap, Neal swept wide going into a banked turn, then dove underneath the leader, pulling off a prefectly timed block pass that left Brake wondering what hit him. Neal pulled away for the win with Brake second. In the second molO, Brake ran up front again for two laps before Neal got by and went on to another win. Neal led a Honda sweep of the lOp five places overall. Brake's second place kept him out front in the series standings. • Results Pene, Raymond tame Coleta Valley 250 PRO: 1. O.vid 1C.11y (Y.m~ 2. Manley manltandles TucsonMX By Michael Ross TUCSON, AZ, MAY 9-]0 Saguaro Raceway in Tucson was the site of the final round of racing for the NMA qualifier and Yamaha support rider Brian Manley commanded the ]25 and 250cc Pro classes on Saturday with double moto wins. The Tucson track consists of five long straights punctuated by steep double and triple jumps ending with bermed hair pin turns at either end. Needless to say, it was the kind of track that put a premium on a rider's ability to fly. To a man, all praised the track as being "[un, but safe... · Although Man]ey raced to the first 125cc Pro moto win on Saturday, Honda-backed Kyle Lewis and Yamaha support rider JeU Mabery battled tooth-and-nail over second. Mabery bad the holeshot the first moto, but Manley went past on lap one. Lewis moved in to challenge Mabery on lap two and the race was on. Lewis challenged continually, finally getting by on lap seven. Mabery stayed close, but couldn't repass, taking third at the checkered flag ahead of Chris Young. Moto two was the most exciting moto of the day. After a four o'clock break for the Honda Housesponsored barbeque the 125cc Pros hit the track once again. Kawasaki rider Frank Brundage nailed down the holeshot in moto two and led Manley, Lewis, Lance 0hnson and Brian Pryor for two aps. Manley zapped Brundage in the whoops to take over the lead. Brundage bobbled on lap three at the finish line and Lewis flew past for second. Lewis was hungry for a win and it showed. He closed in on the Yamaha rider, desperately looking [or daylight. Not finding any, Lewis decided to make some· room and stuffed Manley on the inside. The Yamaha rider held his ground and Lewis went down. Lewis quickly remounted and blasted back into the race getting some very serious air l time in' his bid to catch up. Unfortunately for Lewis his practice bike, which bad over 100 hours on it, wasn't up to the task. Manley took the checkered flag ahead of Lewis and Brundage with Pryor in fourth. 1n 250cc Intermediate action Deano Cowan styled his way to double moto wins over a 26-rider field. Honda House sponsored Cowan grabbed the lead in moto one and never looked back as Jamie Morobito and Chris Pocino battled for second throughout the moto. Pacino fell on lap five of the sixlap moto after passing Morobito, but quickly remounted and repassed his Yamaha rival to score second. The moto two holeshot went to J.D. Crawford, but Cowan was past Crawford by the end of the first lap as Morobito and Pacino moved in. With Crawford holding pat, Pocino jumped past Morobito on lap three, but Morobito came back and repassed Pacino. Morobito went to the inside of Crawford on lap four to take over second place. Crawf.ord stayed witinin striking distance, but never got another chance when the • ~ce was flagged one lap short. Suzuki support rider Jimmy Gaddis took runaway wins in the small 80cc Expert .class and then rode his ]25 to double moto wins in the Intermediate Modified class. Gaddis simply ran away from a very talented and competitive field of ]5 riders. In moto one Gaddis left Shayne King to deal with Richard Saxton. King took a distant second to Gaddis at the finish with Saxton getting third. Moto two saw Gaddis nab the ho]eshot and leave the pack behind, while Brent White battled with Wes Parker [or second. Parker held on until lap three, but White capitalized on Parker's mistake and took over second on the next lap. Gaddis raced to the finish line 12 seconds ahead o[ White, Parker and Phil Lawrence. ASHLAND, AL, MAY 10 Yamaha-mounted Shane Pene pulled off a surprise win in the l25cc C class at round five of the $6000 Alabama/Georgia Championship Series held at the Co]eta Valley MX facility. Answer/Scott-backed Pene used a 4-] moto tally to gain points on the series' point leaders and jump from lOth to sixth in the standings. Kawasaki rider Brian Raymond earned a bard-fought victory over series rivals Andre Pene and Shannon Brooker in Senior Mini competition. The win enabled Raymond to hold his point lead with one series round remaining. David Morse avoided a ]o-rider pile-up in tum one of the first ]25cc C moto and led tbe race until Dewayne Walker took over. On the fourth lap Busbee Dyer assumed the lead and cruised in for the win with Walker holding second. Morse led the second IDOto followed by Kevin Cozadd. Pene was on the move through the pack with Raymond following in his wake. The pair bumped Morse from the lead and rode to a one-two finish. The moto took a heavy toll on the field with only 17 of 25 riders finishing. Andre Pene $ot the holeshot in the first Senior MIDi moto followed by Raymond and Brooker. The three riders quickly pulled away from the rest of the pack. Pene stayed out front for three laps until Raymond passed and took the win. Brooker held on for third place. Brooker squeezed past Pene in the first turn of moto two with Raymond back in third. With Brooker setting a blistering pace out front, Raymond attempted an inside pass on Pene over the double jump. The plan backfired when Raymond collided with Pene in midair, causing both riders to hit the deck hard. Though visibly shaken, both were able to reenter the race. Brooker took the moto win, with Raymond over-taking Nathan Bissette on tlie last lap to secure the overall victory. Brad Jones snagged the holeshot in the first Open B race with Billy Ethridge second. Series leader Kevin Mathews was boxed in off the line and ran last. Ethridge went down and Leon Smith put his Honda XR5000 into second. Smith was pushing his machine to the limits and on the next lap he p?wered past Jones for the lead. EthrIdge came on strong to take the win with Mathews also slipping past Smith at the finish. Mathews grabbed the lead off the second moto start, while Ethridge slid out in the first turn. Orr took the win, but Scott Adams put on a strong charge to finish a close second to Orr at the flag. Adams came back to top , the Open Pros in the IT portion of the event. Orr jumped out to the holeshot in the main event, but Trace Polson and Shane Jolley were right on his heels. Adams got of[ to a slow sixth place start, but was quickly working his way through the pack and had soon moved up to a challenging fourth place. . Adams shadowed third place PoIson and worked his way by and started to fight with Jolley over second. For two laps Adams and Jolley had a back-and-forth duel for second, then Adams' made an inside move on Orr to steal the spot for good. Adams closed on Orr near the close of the race, but had to settle for second. Jolley held on for third and Polson took fourth. In the IT portion o[ Saturday's event the same riders again fought over the first place spot. Adams was determined to win this time as he grabbed the holeshot and held 0[[ the challenges o[ Orr and Jolley to claim his first win o[ the season. Orr arid Jolley had a good battle [or second, as they swapped the runner-up spot several times, but at the flag Orr was able to make a pass stick and nipped Jolley for second.
