The event was run in conjunction with regular SMX motocross and was hosted by the CZ Owners Club. Rabe had to battle with Husky. mounted Chip Howell in both the 250 and 500cc Expert races. Howell won the opening 500cc moto, but from there on, it was a sweep for Rabe, who carded the next three wins on his -way to the overall victories. Butch Cochran pushed his Triumph twin to third in the 500s, then returned to top the Vet Experts on the same machine; Ossa-mounted Peter Ford and BSA rider Dick Mann rounded out the top three in the Vet ExPert division. Ed Czajka took his Greeves to onetwo moto finishes en route to topping the Pre-'65 Lightweight Intermediate class. David Metz l~ CercieUo, Majeski split Pine Grove ST PINE GROVE, PA, MAY 17 Tom Cerciello and Rob Majeski split wins in the Open Expert class when the Flying Dutchmen M.e. hosted their third short track of the season under clear warm conditions. The split occurred from a left over race from May 3 that was rained out. Nine of the 14 riders who attended that race returned for the competition. ACUJa:lly, the top three riders went at it three times, with Dale Gingrich edging Cerciello and Majeski in the six-lap heat race for the rained out event that looked more like a final with typical 600cc Expert closequarter racing. By class standards, the Open Expert rain-out feature race was one of the calmest of the season. Cerciello grabbed the lead out of the second turn from Majeski, Gingrich and Jim Haas and led the entire distance with the others remaining close, but not challenging. After a year-long, work-connected hiatus, Cerciello has returned with a vengeance. He grabbed the lead at the start of the regular Open Expert final, looking for his third straight class win. But Majeski got by him as they came off the second turn on lap two and gradually pulled away. A real battle shaped up for third between National rider David Miller, Gingrich, Tom Majeski and Mickey Rusden. While Tom Majeski and Rusden stayed close behind, Gingrich 'and Miller battled over third the entire distance, with Gingrich using his vast experience of the track to just nip Miller at the line for third, while Rob Majeski took his first win of the year in defense of his AMAI District 6, number-one plate. Gingrich had earlier taken his "customary" win in th~ 250cc Expert class, leading wire-to-wire, but was closely pursued by Mike Varnes, making his best race ever as an Expert. Dave Duhaine took third from Ben Machamer as they entered the third turn on the third lap. At the end, Gingrich held two lengths over Varnes. Amateur action was highlighted by all three winners taking their first wins ever. Jill Lautenbacker took her first win on a full-sized bike when she led the 200cc class wire to wire. Jamie Pujol held second in the early going until Mike Walton passed him at the end of the second lap, setting the top three. Jim Haldeman jumped into the lead at the start of the 250cc Amateur race, trailed by Dave Smith and Wayne Franklin. After a slow start, Todd Hurst moved into fourth spot by the end of the second lap. Smith stayed close and pulled beside Haldeman as they went down the back straight two laps from the end, but Haldeman held and slightly increased his margin. Johnny Bowers took the lead from Roy Collins, Terry Swartley and Dallas Baer as the Open Amateur class hit the back straight. But Swartley, making his first start in about a year, pushed his way into second by the end of the second lap, and took first from Bowers on the fourth lap on his way to a 20-yard margin. Baer challenged Collins for third in the late laps but came up a length short. Results OPEN EX: 1. Tom Carciello (Yam); 2. Rob Majeski (H-DI; 3. Dale Gingrich (Vam). . 55: 1. Ricky Winsett (Yam); 2. Suchli bags Colorado Springs MX win By Larry Johnson COLORADO SPRINGS, CO, MAY 17 Tim Buchli's injuries have finally healed, and the 1985 and 1986 125cc Pro state champ won his first overall today. He took the lead in moto one on lap four while the winner of the first six events this season, Stacey Cook, was threading through traffic from the back after a first lap pileup. By lap seven, Cook went around Robert Rose for second and set his sights on Buchli. But three laps later, he pulled out with a seized engine. Buchli motored home far ahead of Rose. Robert Ibold grabbed the lead in round two with Buchli fifth and Cook 18th. Buchli took the lead on lap three when Ibold crashed. Two laps later, Cook, on a borrowed ~ike, was in second. He chased Buchli for six laps before Buchli got a bit out of shape of( a jump. Cook passed on the outside and went on to win the moto, but Buchli stayed right on Cook's rear fender to the checkers and easily won the overalL Corey Cope captured both 250c;c Pro motos to win his second overall this season. He took the lead from Derek Brown in moto one on lap two and pulled away from Brown and Kip Sandell by the finish. Cope led Brown, Sandell and Cook out of the gate in round two, and the foursome.. ran fender-to-fender until lap eight when a series of events left Cope alone out front. First Sandell bailed, then Cook tangled with a lapped. rider and crashed, and,. finally, Brown's rear brake locked up, putting him out of contention. Dave Newell left second place Sandell and the rest of the Open Pros way behind in the first moto. And he looked to be on his way to another victory as he gated first in round two. But as he hit the first turn, he caught a square edge and his bike flipped completely around, launching him head first into the dirt. Sandell took over the lead for keeps while Newell, after remounting, gradually worked his way back to second. But Sande~1 had his third Open Pro overall thIS year. Results . 60 NOV: 1.
