Donny Schmit put a 7-1 tally on the board to win his first-ever 125cc. National; the Suzuki pilot topped Guy Cooper and George Holland. still too soft, but it was 10 times better than the first moto. "With decent finishes in Denver, I'll win the 250cc title. I don't like taking second, but I won't make the same mistake I made in '82." Editor.) 125cc National Yamaha's Jeff Leisk stole the holeshot with a muddy line through turn one at the start of the first 125cc moto. By lap two Dymond utilized a rough inside Iine to lead, followed by Leisk and Honda rider Larry Brooks. A small gap back, it was Holland and Schmit setting up their rhythm. By lap four, Dymond had a fivesecond lead on Brooks, who had pa sed Leisk for second. Holland, Kawasaki rider Eddie Warren and Schmit were 4-5-6. A lap later Warren broke out of the pack for fourth, leaving Holland and Schmit to scrap over fifth. Honda rider Guy Cooper gained turf and snuck up on Schmit, passing in the infield section of the course for sixth. Cooper also passed Holland for fifth, leaving Leisk and Warren ahead of him while J;>ymond and Brooks broke away from the pack. Dymond finished with'a 20-second lead over Brooks. Leisk put on a late moto charge, but fell just short of Brooks at the line. Cooper set up Warren, and then snuck inside through the last turn for fourth. Holland was sixth, Schmit seventh and Mike Healey kept the factory Cagiva on pace for eighth. While Brooks ran off with the lead in moto two, Dymond was picking himself up in the first tum. "I just can't believe someone didn't cream me," said the defending 125cc National Champion. "I went down right in front of everyone!" Brooks pulled away from the pack while Warren, Cooper and Schmit clustered in 2-3-4. Honda rider Rick Ryan, Healey, and Suzuki 'riders Keith Turpin and Holland were 56-7-8. Schmit passed Cooper for third, and then made an easy move past Warren when the Kawasaki pilot fell off the pace. Schmit then got another break when Brooks fell out of con'fention wi th mechanical trouble, stopping a great run for the California charger. Dymond came on strong after his first tum faJ!, and broke into the top 10. A second crash then set him back once agalO, putting him out of contention for overall. Schmit cauied his lead to the finish, good enough for top honors in class. Holland and Cooper had a great battle for second, with the pair making contact through a turn before Holland went by on the outside. Healey carded a strong fourth, Leisk was fifth, and Turpin led his teammate Ronnie Tichenor in for sixth. "This will really add some confidence to my racing," said Schmit, who grew up in Minnesota and now calls California home. ''I'm only 20, and the guys who are winning are older than me. I was so happy when I won the second moto, I didn't even know I got the overall. "U.S. Suzuki and Jeff Clark really helped me pull this one off. We tested yesterday and got everything on the bike just right." . "My bars got knockcil down when I fell in the first tum, and I had a hard time getting my legs underneath them in the turns," said Dymond. "I hit an off-camber wrong 'and went down. I got tired too.
