~ Ewerth cashes in at :: Talladega RR By Cindy Bowen 3TALLADEGA, AL, MAY 10 .; Ron Ewerth took his Wall Schaefer/ Shoei/Cycle Nuts & Bolts/Auto ... Litre/D.I.D -sponsored Honda CBR600 Hurricane to three impressive wins at Talledaga Gran Prix Raceway, includin~ the C Production race. MeanwhIle, Larry Shorts took home three wins while sorting out his Suzuki GSXR750 Superbike and the Lockhart Racing GSXRllOO Endurance bike fOI the upcoming Camel Pro races at Road Atlanta. The C Production Expert race was the most exciting race of the day. The fact that this was a Honda contingency race attracted the southeast's fastest racers. To make this even more interesting, due to a ruling concerning the non-availability of 17-inch front DOT-approved tires, s all racers had the option of running '" slicks front and rear. Scott Russell had the pole position afte,r winning- the heat race on Sat("~ urday but it was Continental Tire:!' sponsored Greg Tysor who got the holeshot and led into turn one. This was Tysor's first race since breaking his shoulder at Summit Point on Apri.l II and he had practiced here - OR Friday to see if he was up to ~. Tysor had opted not to run shcks, but instead mounted a Continental on the rear and a Metze1er on the front. Behind Tysor was Dunlopsponsored Paul Bray, followed closely by Russell, also on Dunlops. Russell got by Bray in the 90's but Tysor still led the pack. Lap one ended with Tysor in the lead, followed by Russell and Bray. On lap two, Ewerth passed Bray and Russell and started closing in on Tysor. Ewerth showed Tysor a wheel in just about every turn on the track, but Tysor maintained the lead. Russell made several attempts to pass Ewerth and alLhough the DOT Dunlop rear was working great, it was no match for the Michelin slick that Ewerth had mounted. On lap nine Ewerth shot past Tysor in turn one and started pulling out a small le.ad. Tyscir attempted to catch Ewerth, but couldn't pull it off. Russell finished a close third with Cam Roos fourth and Jamie James fifth. James had missed the heat race on Saturday and came from the back row of the grid for his fifth place finish. Ewerth continued his streak in B Producion. It was Mike Smith off the line first, but Ewerth shot into turn one with the lead. Smith spent a very short time as a Novice and this was his first race weekend as an .Expert. Ewerth pulled out an iDIpressive lead once he hit the back straight and left Cam Roos and Smith battling for the second spot. Roos got by Smith in the 90's and started pulling away. Ewerth continued to put distance on the rest of the field and easily took the win with Roos second and Smith third. ~ Results o PROD EX: 1. Jason leuring (Yam); 2. Paul Poola (Yam); 3. By Scott Daloisio GARDENA, CA, MAY 21 After giving the competition a oneweek reprieve, "Boogaloo" Bobby Schwartz won the Scratch main at Ascot South Bay Stadium for the sixth time in seven weeks. Schwartz led the four ~per from the tapes to the Roy Kelun~ checkered flag. Schwartz is a phenomenal starter and that was in evidence Thursday evening. He came out of gate three - notoriously the worst in speedway - and l!e set the pace into the first turn. Mike Faria, who has placed second to Schwartz more than any other rider in 1987, came off the pole but he missed the gate and was third as the field entered the first bend behind Schwartz and "Showtime" Bobby Ott. Brai:! Oxley got a tremendous drive coming off the second bend and that set up a battle for second with Faria and Ott. Coming down the front chute at the end of the first circuit Ott, Faria and Oxley were three abreast. Faria took Oxley for second on the back chute on lap two. He kept his momentum up and dropped Ott to . third at the end of the second circuit. Faria had open ground and two laps to catch Schwartz and the Silkolene/Malcolm Smith/C.T.I. Brace/Justice Brothers/Oakley Weslake. Faria closed the gap, but he was trying to get by on the inside and Schwartz was guarding the pole. When the checkered came out it was Schwartz to the win with Faria glued to his rear tire. Third spot went to Oxley with Ott taking the wrap up. Young Greg Hancock, the 1985 Junior National Champion, looked like a seasoned veteran as he won all four of his races including the eightlap Handicap main event. Hancock (Bruce Penhall/Off Shore/Malcolm Smith/Bobby Schwartz/Thunder Wear Gloves Weslake) came off the 10-yard line to lead the entire race. Ed Castro and Keith Larson both passed Scott Brant, who was having a problem in the first bend, for second and third. Faria, coming from the 50, picked off Larsen for third before the end of the first revolution. Faria then challenged Castro who was able lO fend him off until the fourth circuit when Faria got the drive on the back straight. Faria had a clear shot at Hancock and he had half of the race to catch him. Unfortunately, there would be no stopping the fleet Hancock. Faria couldn't close the gap and the talented youngster was headed for his first-ever South Bay Stadium win. Hancock won the main by a half straight over Faria. Oxley made a last lap charge at Faria, but had to settle for third with John Cook, visiting from Northern California, fourth. Kelcey Gordon (NJIUScott Goggles Weslake) got on the program as a reserve rider and then rode two smooth races to win his heat and the main event on the Sl,Ipport class portion of the program. David Diaz placeq second to Gordon in the 'main with Jeff Franzenburg third. Results SCRATCH: 1. Bobby Schwan; (Was); 2.' Mike Forie (Jew); 3. Brod Oxley (Was). HOCP: 1. Greg Honcock (Was); 2.
