steak dinner back at the VFW Hall and inw the evening when we reminisced about the day's ride and thought about tomorrow. "Today was more [un than I've had in years," said Bert Fox, who traveled [rom Salt Lake City for the ride. "I was looking [or something to put the [un back into motorcycles and it definitely did that. The trail was great and the organization is exceptional - where else could you go out and ride 130 miles this easily with all the support, the gas, the lunches. And there's the camaraderie too - that's one of the things I like about motorcycles. All these new people to meet and everyone's here for a good time." It was the second Nevada 200 in a row [or Chris Real of Duralube Oil; Real was limping around after a geto£[ half way through the day. "Duralube supports so many of the events up here - the ·Las Vegas 300, Whiskey Pete's, and this one, and being able to actually participate instead of just standing there passing out oil is great," Chris said. "We go to 30 races a year and this is abou t the only thing I get to ride. I can't go racing any more because if I get hurt it-hurts business, so to get out ~d ride reasonably quick over some 'great terrain without the competition making you go so fast was terrific. This makes it all worthwhile. It's our way of letting down our hair and getting out and having some fun instead of working all the time." For Jack Baker, an ATK pilot from Las Vegas, the best part of the day was watching Folks ride. I"I sP.ent 25 miles on Casey Folks' rear tire in the last section and that was the highlight of my day," said Baker. "I've been hearing about Casey Folks for years and today I finally got to see why. He's the smoothest rider I've ever seen in the desert." Mike Morris of Las Ve~s, one of the few riders who didn't bite the dust during day one of the ride, was hack for his third year in a row. "I don't come to ride - I come for the food," he joked. "The steak dinner they put on here is the best. Casey throws the best trail rides around too. They're always well organized, with fun terrain and a lot of good people. I just ride my own pace and have fun. That's what it's all about." Riders from the A Group had just as much fun but the faster pace took its toll on the bikes. Out of 22 starters, only 10 made it to the end of the rugged trail. . "This one was neater than the rest of them -- tougher and more demanding," said desert ace Scott Morris, who, like his father Mike, has ridden all three Nevada 200 events. "It was fast too. It was wide open a lot of the time and I'd say our average speed for the day was about 40 (mph). "It was better than a regular desert race. It was all wet and there was no dust, and it was a lot more relaxed. You don't have to worry about winning the thing, so you can have a lot more fun." The feelings of all the participants were summed up by the youngest rider there - my riding parmer 15-year-old Sam Jaeckel from Las Vegas. "I've done all three of them and they get better every time," said Joeckel. "You bet I'll keep riding these. I'll be back next year for sure." The Nevada 200 is an experience not to be missed. Riders interested in participating in next year's ride should contact Casey Folks at Best of the Desert. . And by the way - the line forms behind me. • NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TRACKS SATURDAYoClASSES 112·25 I SUNDAY ClASSES "·11 s.'urdey·YOUTH & Sundey·,AMATEUR NORTHEAST "II • YTH AREA LOCATIONS Jun. 6·7 . ..
