The l2 5cc class was th e largest class of th e da y, boasting 53 riders split into t w o heats. T he top 18 ride rs in eac h heat adva nced to a fina l moto, while th e rest o f th e riders went to a consola tion m ot o, In h eat one, Honda-mounted Mike Snyder grabbed th e lead 0(( th e line, follo wed b y Mike McClung and Steve Wooled&e. Snyder, by the th ird la p , had bui l t a IO-second gap between him self and McClung Steele, a lso in h eat one, wa s sixth through th e first turn , followed by J im DeFranco. While Sn yuder continued to build hi s lead, Steele and. DeFran co went to work picking 0(( the riders ahead of them. With only. a lap-and-a-half to th e checkered £lag, Steele and DeFranco were w orking o n p a ssing McClung. Snyder was untouchable, holding onto a l7 -second lead, when Steele and De F r a n ce passed McClung before beginning of the final lap. DeFranco staye d wtih Steele th ro ugh each turn a s the two riders rode tir eto-tire throughout th e fin al lap. DeFra n co pressured Steele but was unable to pass. KTM rider Chris Grasso grabbed the start of th e secon d heat, while Kell y Johnson , Jim J ohnson and James T a ylor battled for ' seco nd. Kell y Johnson held second while Jim Johnson and T aylor swapped third. H a lfway through th e rnoto, both Tay lor and Jim Johnson p assed Kell y Johnson. The three riders filed . pas t the checkered £lag in that order , n in e seconds behind Grasso. Snyder; Wooledge and Steele rode side-by- side through the first turn at the start of the final, with Steel e ta king the edge and Wooledge claim ing second.
