Commen ts on the enduro were mixed afterwards , with ma ny rid ers complaining about not getting a break in th e morning, and a few with horror stor ies abou t getting stuck in the mud. But most agreed tha t th e first loop was safe but tough - there wa s nothing included that was dangerous, just grindingly difficult a nd point-con suming, lik e an old .. tim e end uro. Jones tops MarshallHM By Bill Holt MARSHALL, IL, MAY 9 Phil Jones put his Wabash Valley/ McGaughey Farms H-D at the front of th e 500cc final and held off all com ers at the L incoln Trails round of th e DC Cycle/Super Seer/Banzai Bros .-sponsored AMA/District Ii Cha mpions hip Dirt Track Series on the half mi le ova l at Clark Co unt y Fairgrounds. Steve Hall held off Danny Dotson for the Mini class win. Scott Huff followed Ph il Palmer hom e in the 125cc heat , but Palmer co uld n' t keep Huff in the second spo t in the final. Huff kept Palmer at ba y for th e win , T ony Parkhill grabbed the third spot a nd Tim Gilliland filled o ut th e top four . Matt Collier led th e ent ire 200cc final. T eammates Bob a nd Mike Collier kept it close, but th e Hondas were no match for th e Suzuki in th e end. Bultaco-rn ounted Larry Van Valkenburg made th e trip from Adri an, Michigan to doininat e th e 400cc cla ss. It was Mark Au gu stein's Bultaco taking th e second spot wh en Les Sch ackrnan 's H onda gave o u t in th e late laps. Bart Schmulbach worked hi s way from his heat win through th e tworow 250cc fina l to tak e th e styli sh win . Rob Collins kept his De n 's Aut ob ody Honda close in the second spo t while ho lding off th e number o ne plate of Sh awn Wad e's Honda , wh o moved throu gh th e pa ck after a bad start to take third. Ch arli e Southgate ro lled in from Nash vill e, T ennessee a nd styled hi s way to th e Senior class wi n over the n umber o ne plate of Les Eslin ger and J ohn Mill in gton. T he 500cc class was a brawl from the drop of the green. It was a fo urrider battle after th e two-ro w start was sorted out, and by the third lap J ones had worked his way to the front, lead ing R eed Bert i l i nos Ro tax, Aaron Crockett and R ick Knuth. Each of th e four were in a position to tak e th e win more than o nce, but Jones picked th e good line and held on for the win. The Pro final featured 500, 600 and 750cc motorcycles, and when the dust cleared, it was Ro tax-mount ed Greg Logue waving the checkers on the vi ctory lap . McLean wins again at Sears Point RR By Michael Green SONOMA, CA, MAY 10 Motorcycle Unlimited ' s Craig McLean pulled off win number three in as many road races a t Sears Poin t Raceway during round three of th e CVRG 's Championship Historic Series. After a very lon g wait o n th e start ing line, Dan Phillips and hi s BSA B50 pulled the hol esh ot, followed by fellow BSA rid er Fred Mark a nd Andrew Saunders on a Triumph TIOO. For three races now, Mork had been trying different set-u ps on his sus pensio n to cure a nigh spee d wobble, a nd this weekend he'd made ' so me improveme nt - he wasn't last. Within the first la p , Mcl.ean 's Matchl ess G50 had overha uled ever yone to lak e th e lead . The 360cc class lead er Dave Troetschl er, aboard hi s sho rt-s tro ke Ducati, was soon past th e 500 Triumph of Saunders', out found o ut quickl y th at his main compe titio n was nowhere in sight. Sco tt Borem , th e 350cc class points leader, had go ne down in turn 10 whe n hi s e ng i ne se ized , thi s rirneT roe tsch ler had an easy victory. In 250cc class ac tion, J eff H ecox with the 10K Engineering Ducati a nd Mike Green o n h is WCBR Ducati had ca ug h t Mork's BSA (which still wob bled a bit) in turn two . From there on it seemed to be anybody's race, but as time went on Green ' slowed, as his motor had a minor piston seizure, damaging the rings, which then o iled everything up. H ecox and Green both managed to get around Mork, but on the last lap, Green mis sed a shift exiting turn II and Mork got by. Schmulbach nabs Neoga Scrambles By Bill Holt · NEOGA, IL, MAY 10 Bart Schmulbach cleaned up in his heat and cam e back in the 250cc final to take the victory over Kevin Snyder and second-h eat winner . Bruce Robinson at th e Central Two M.e. Scrambles round of th e DC Cycle/ Super Seer/Banz ai Bros.-sponsored, AMA District 17 Ch ampionship Dirt Track Seri es. Doni Holeman finished a tight "fourth over Shawn Wade. The program started with the Pee Wees, wh ere it was Randy Smith rolling home in front of Shannon Wright and Reid Ceponis. Sco tt Huff and hi s Greybo y/Gardener Honda topped the 125cc class , sh u tting out Mike H all and Dave Stanfeild. The 200cc class was won by Matt Collier , wh o was more than a match for Bob and Mike Collier. Mike Tipton and Bob Collier had a good battle going in the 400cc class until Collier's motor went so uth, giving Tipton th e win, Mark Augustein too k seco nd and G len Milleville finish ed third. Les Eslinger let the Seni or class kn ow why he wears the number one plate by taking th e win over Stanfeild and Gary Brannan. Aaron Crockett used a high and fast line through the first turn to gra b th e lead in the 500cc class and spent th e rest of th e race fighting off Reed Bertilino a nd Bart Schmulbach.
