His firs t run was a near disaster when he tried to wh eeli e the Harley over a ledge after th e start. T he rear whee l spu n inst ead of liftin g the wheel , and the 500-p lus pound projectile slam med into the face of the h ill , throwing Peterso n onto the handleba r. After the normal hillclimb act ivit y, th e top 10 rid ers in each exhibition class faced off in th e Rain ier Beer Shoot-Out. Each rider took o ne run on the Open Exhibition hi ll for a prize of SI000 winner ta ke a ll. T he Shoot-O ut went off in a raging downpour with T ravi s Whitlock a nd Peterso n choosing to run th eir 500s. Bo th riders ended up throwi ng their bi kes on to p of a cliff o ver. 1000 feet ' up th e hill to better th e o ther 18 riders . Peterson was measured the winner by one inch . Peterson too k a chec k for $500 to the trophy p resen tatio n a nd presented it to Whitlock. He said an inch was too close to call wi th the measurin g system used in hillclimbs. Peterson 's gift was a notabl e sign of sportmansh ip, but spo rtsmanship was appa ren t in all th e racing. Riders are not allo wed to ride or wa lk th e hill before compe titio n at th e ris k of being di squalified. Obv iou sly, Kim ball and Whitlock knew every inch of th e lan es, having don e th e con structio n wi th th eir ow n h ands. Nobody co mplained. It was obvious the two are good enough riders to tum in th e results they did. Motocro sser Brian Myerscough turned o ut to ride th e 500cc Expert Kenny Kimball rode his YZ490 1070 feet up a treacherous Utah incline to win the annual Widowmaker Hillclimb. class (ru n with rubber rear tires on a different hi ll , rather than th e steel or rubber paddle tires used in Exhibition ), and the 700cc Exhib ition class . He had trouble keeping th e bike in the la ne in th e Exhibition class and finished mid-pack. In the Expert class, Myerscough fini shed second with an 856.5-foo t run behind Mon tan a' s Doug Beer a t 950 feet. Both riders were aboard Kawasa ki KX500s. Patrick Faddis finished third wit h 825 feet and Karel Kram er was fourth at 652 feet o n a H onda borro wed from Peterson. Oregon trial s rider J ay P. T erry wound up fifth wi th a brilliant ride o n a KTM 500MXC with short suspe nsion and a stoc k swi ngarm . Terry went up 627 feet. Peterson 's son Robbie too k th e win in th e Mini class over Kris Kroeger a nd J oe B. Moak. Keith Ehnes came all th e way fro m South Dakota to win th e Sports ma n Open class with nearl y double the d istan ce o f seco n d p lace Da ve J or gensen. Results 700 EXHIB: 1.
