's seco nd event of th e seaso n , held a t th e Centra l Ohio Competition R iders' clubgrounds. Su n ny skies, mild temperatures a nd II tough sectio ns gree ted an exce llent turnout of 63 riders. The demanding terrain a ttracted riders from M ich igan, Indiana a n d Ken tu ck y, . includi ng trial s lumi nary Wiltz Wagner. T rai lmaster Roger Ans el a nd h is cre w put together a group of sections tha t ranged in d ifficu lty from nat iona l level to o ne th at a llowed beginners a cha nce to savor a clean. One exp ert rider des cr ibed section two as " Wo rld class". T he sectio n started in the bottom of a deep ravine a nd wound up through mud-soup roc ks , cu lm ina ti ng in a two-step wat er fall ex it. Onl y two clean s were reg istered a ll day. Coffey a nd teve Oehrle dueled head -to-head for the entire event, card i ng identica I scores of 9 a n d 8 for th e firs t two loo p s. Coffey took th e lead af ter round three a nd added a two poi nt cushion o n the last la p . O ehrle lost a no th er p oint o n time to make th e fina l score 34 to 38. Wentzel sailed to vic to ry whi le Kro tzer edged o u t Sw enso n for runn er-up ho n o rs. T he tired but ta lented Mi chner Indu stries/ EP Perform ance sponsored Wei-m el went back o u t and romped to two moto wins in th e 125cc A class. Steve Ro bin so n tried to reel-in the leader with hi s Kawasaki, but h ad to se ttle for seco nd in both motos. Bi ll R o b i n so n (n o relat ion ) g u ided h is H onda to third. Int eresting ly, th e Wentzell family had decided to gi ve up m otocross a whil e ago for eco nom ic reas ons. T h a t a ll chan ged a t the G lass City Mo to rcycle Cl ub ba nq uet h eld a t th e co ncl usion of the raci ng seaso n. A dra w i n g was con d uct ed a n d th e Wentzell s wo n a new bi ke do nate d b y Sh el Dex ter 's de al ers hip, th e Winner's Circle. This good fortu ne allowed the fami ly to co n tin ue to J ra ce mot ocross. Th e obvious ly successfu l resu lts have been be nefi cia l for both th e Wentzells a nd our sport. The du e l betw een teen ager R ich ard Bol enbaugh a nd retired Pro Dav e Glenn for su pre macy o f the O p e n A cl ass cont inu ed into to n ig ht's ra ces. In m oto o ne, Bol enba ugh snared the h ol esho t but spe nt th e ent ire race in a h ead-to-h ead strugg le w ith a re lent less Da ve Glenn. T he two H o n da riders pu t o n qu ite a show as th eir battle p ulled them away fro m the fie ld. Ma y Marsh sta lked the leader s, ke eping h is Ka wasak i within striki ng dista nce. First yea r. Open ride r Bolenba ug h survived G lenn's o ns la ug h t to cap ture th e m oto and appeared to be o n his way to a nother overall trophy. Mo to two sa w Marsh lead into turn o ne, pursued by G lenn an d Scott Bisho p , wi th Bol enbaugh in fourth. Wi th in moments th e H o n da Eastspon sored G len n h ad strea ked into th e ' lead an d bega n to p ut so me distance bet ween himself a nd the field. But as the laps began to wi nd do wn , Glenn began to wea r o u t. Two weeks ago G lenn had been snagged j u st prior to th e fi ni sh by hi s yo u nger pursuers. It loo ked like this was go in g to be a repeat as Marsh and Bol enbau g h were a ll o ver Glenn 's rear fender .
