Kenney scores at Spring Creek MX By Rolfe Otterness MILLVILLE, MN , MAY 3 Cory Keeney captured th e overa ll win in the hotly contested Mini Senior class at the first motocross of the year at Spring Creek Park. Moto finishes of 3-1 gave him the edge over Brandon Backes' 2-3 score. Other successful riders included 125 and 250cc Expert winner Bru ce Gates , Rich Munson Senior A class winner and Mike Atkinson Mini Pee Wee and Mini Junior class winner. Pat Donaho led all th e way in th e first Mini Senior moto. Backes held second off th e starting line with Dan Van Hee third. Keeney pushed by Van Hee late in the first lap and set off in pursuit of Backes. The last two la ps featured a fierce dice for second with Keeney pushing Backes. At the che ckered, Donaho took the win with Keen ey and Backes a few seconds back. Keeney pushed out front quickly in the second moto and wen t on to wi n. Backes held secon d for th e first two la ps, but Van Hee dro p ped him to third at the end. Donaho had trouble early in the moto and finished way down. Tim Bartylla grabbed the holeshot in the first 125cc Expert moto, but Brandon Hopkins passed him befor e the end 01 the first la p. Gate s moved up to challenge Hopkins and after sever...I laps he was out front. Hopkins stayed close , but couldn't regain th e lead. Robbie Engstrom ran a stro ng third with Bartylla fourth. In th e next moto, Gates mad e a nice move to grab the lead around th e first tum. Engstrom and Hopkins sett led into the 2-3 spots for th e first lap. Dorsey doubles at Pine Grove ST By Len Breech PINE GROVE, PA, MAY 3 Harold Dorsey became the first rider of the you ng season to score a double victory as he too k wins in both th e 200 and 250cc Ama teur classes as th e .Flying Dutch men M.C. held their second short trac k of the season. Dorsey's win in the 200cc class was fairly easy as he took the lead from Scott Lake and Mike T homas and kept his H onda on two wheels 10 score the win . In the 250s, Dorsey's H on da was the quickest, but was having tro ub le keeping it on the groove, allo wing Dave Smith to stay close in pursuit of his fourth straight class win. In the late laps, Dorse y would have tro uble holding his line exiting the turns, letting Smith close the gap. At the flag, Dorsey held a two length ma rg in. One of the best races was turned in by the 90cc Expert class co mpe titors with Mike Sponseller tak ing the lead from Kevin Varnes at th e end of th e first lap, with Georgie Price close behind- and Chuck Wrecsics several lengths back. Pri ce took over second on the third lap and was just behind Sponseller. Throughout th e entire event , only a length or two separated th e top three. At the flag, Spons eller won by a bik e length. Pri ce came back a little later to defeat Sponseller in the 200cc Expe rt class. Dal e Gingrich a ~ain won th e 250cc Expert class with Price aga in gi ving himsome competition. Gingrich grabbed the lead at th e starte;: from teammate Ben Macham er, Price a n d T om Cerciello. Pri ce took seco nd abo u t halfway through th e race, with Machamer holding off th e vetera n Cerciello for a few laps. Cerciello sli pped by Ma chamer going down the c u r vi n g back straight for third. At the flag , Pri ce managed to close 10 within three bik e lengths of winner Gingrich . Results 55: 1. Neal, Ahonen scalp Indian Creek MX By Gary Crider CULLMAN, AL , MAY 3 Todd Neal made a convincing return to racing, winning both 125cc B mot os in round three of the Georgia Cycle Supply Spring Series at Indian Creek MX. Darryl Ahonen came out on top in the hotly co n tested .250! Open and 125cc A divisions. Freewheeling Honda-backed Neal had been sidelined du e to an injury suffered last Decem ber. Neal quickly moved up from fifth spo t 10 eventually pass leader Lonnie Brown for the first 125cc B moto win. . Nea l holeshot moto two but went over the ber m in turn o ne, reentering the co urse in 14th place. By the seco nd la p , Neal was in second behi nd Bro wn . Nea l passed Brown in the same corner he had used to go by Brown in the first moto and won with a perfect score. ' T he time off fro m raci ng was ' good for me," said Nea l, " I think I'm rid ing much smoother than before." Series leader Jason Co leman finished a lackluster 4-6 and said, "I don't know what's wrong. I'm just having a bad da y." Bo Bobbitt!Cycle Specialtiesbacked J on Atkins showed the wa y at th e sta rt of th e first 250cc B moto and held off Co leman on every lap to win. "T h is was th e first tim e I've been able to beat Col eman all year," said Atkins. Mot o two saw T ennessee's Kenny Mar shall take th e hol eshot for a runawav win. Mar shall netted first overa ll ~ia hi s 3-1 tall y. Atkins and Co lema n had a mote -long battle for second that ended wh en Atkins went down o n th e last lap. Col eman 's 2t- 2 ea rned runner-up honors in a tied score over Atkin's 1-3. The 125cc C class saw Dewayne Walker edge H onda of Roswell backed series leader Tommy Bilz in a close ma tch. Firs t moto win ner Kevin Beaver had prob lems from the start in moto two and finished fourt h overall. Blu e Sky Cycle Supply's Greg Hembree topped th e 250cc C divi sion and jumped to second in the serie s standings behind Bilz. Bilz, who has won every 250cc event he has ent ered this year, seemed off-the-pace today and had to settle for third overa ll behi nd Deway ne Bailey. Logan Atkins mai n ta in ed h is perfect series record wi th a I- I victory in the Senior class despite a poor start in moto one. Georgia Fall Series Champion Tommy Smith was runner-up with a 4-2 score. Honda of Roswell's Ricky Lamb was in the hunt until a last lap bid for second spot in moto one resulted in a spill and an eighth place finish. Harper's Kawasaki!UCP/PJ-I ! Scott-backed Darryl Ahonen clawed his way to th e top of the l25cc A. class in two long motos of wheelto-wheel racing with Mike Duncan and Sean Dukes. Ahonen's 1-2 bested Dukes 3-1 and Duncan's 2-3. In th e 250 cc!Open A class, Ahonen and Dukes squared off for two mo tos of fierce racing and the result was a points tie with Ahonen's second moto win earning the top hon ors over Dukes and series leader Joe Rogers. (K a w~ Kuhn grabs Baylands MXgold By Mike Vancil FREMONT, CA, APR. 29 Kurt Kuhn came back after a second place finish in the first moto of the 250cc Interm ediat e class, to claim a first in moto two and take hom e the top cla ss hon ors a t Baylands ' Wednesda y ni ght motocross. In th e first 250cc Int ermedia te moro Todd Hi cks grabbed the holesho t and never looked back . Hicks held off th e determined charges of Kuh n for the ent ire moto to score the win and relegate Kuhn to second. In the second moto H icks and Kuh n ran side-by -side into turn on e, but it was Kuhn wh o held the upper hand as they exited turn two. After that th e moto belonged to Kuhn. Hicks tried every move in the book to try and get by. Kuhn fought off Hicks and claimed th e overall victory.
