" I just had a bad day," said Krause, w ho than ked H allman , Spectro, Answer, . " I got out of the hole okay , . but the bike just didn't p ick up, a nd I was back in the dust all th e wa y trying to ca tch up. " As far as the course went, it needed a lo t more markings," said Krause. " I blew almost every tum o n the second loop. I got lost, and wi th no danger markings, I fell a few tim es as well. I ended up deciding to take it easy and just try to ride safely." Sti ll on the gas ri ght to th e fin ish line was Cartwright, who brough t hom e his Montclair Yamaha/Austin Ra cing-sponsored YZ250 in fourth overa ll (second 250). " I cou ld see Dale (Knapp) and Dan (Ashcraft) in the fir st half of the race, but I cou ldn' t catch th em ," said Cart wright. "T hey were just goi ng too fast for me. I'm pretty happy wi th fourth tho ugh." " It had a lo t of tigh t terrain , so me rocks, uph ills, do wnhills, sa n d washes - a little bit of everythi ng. It wo uld 've been even better if I'd go t a decent sta rt. It took m e four kicks to get goin g and I was back abo ut 30th a t th e bomb a nd then I go t a front flat . I was pl ayin g ca tch up in the dust all da y." Seventh overall went to Nati onal series regular Sco tt Mo rris (H usqvarna) of Las Vegas, Nevada. " It was a lot better than a typi cal District 37 co urse. I liked it a lo t," Mor ris said. "There was a lot more virgin terrain th a t wasn 't whooped o ut like it normall y is here." Still o ut in front of the C-class when the ch eckered flag fell was the Yamaha of Ron Jenni ngs, who is backed by R iverside Motorcycl e Cen ter/Grandsport. " I cras hed a couple of times bu t it was pretty fun," said J en ni ngs, who finished 12th in the overa ll sta ndings. " I just tried to not make any mi stak es." Second pl ace in the l25cc division we nt to Id ah o rider J eff Miller (Honda) , who deserved a special award for dedi cation to desert raci ng. After working la te on Friday, th e Coors Extra Gold-sponsored rider drove all night to mak e it down from Idaho in time for the race, arriving just four hours before th e starting banner dropped. " I' m a bit tired, but I thought the ra ce was great," said Mill er. "T he fir st loop was all rocks and I loved that, but the second loop got so darned fast - way too fast for me." Third in the I25cc ranks went to Edd Price, who just returned from Air Force duty in German y. Dan Dawson of th e Viewfinder's M.C. finished eigh th overa ll to take a wire-to-wi re wi n in the Vet class, desp it e feeli ng a little off-co lor during the race. " It was a good course, but I wen t to a bach elors party for m y brother last nigh t, a nd I'ma bit sic k and a bit deh ydrated to day," sai d th e Kawasaki rider. Daw son's nearest O ver-30 rival was Husky 500 pil ot Mike MuIconery of th e Ch eckers M.e. who finished back in 16th overall. " I th ought I h ad Dan ," said Mu lconery. " I sa w him three or four times. That sucker is just in better condi tio n th an me, bu t I'll ge t him in the next one." Third in the Vet d ivision went-to Wa yne Carlton (20th overa ll) wh o battl ed it o u t th rough out th e race with Lew Wri ght, wi nne r in the Vet 250 class. R ich ard J ack son (H u sqvarn a ) smoked the Senior O pe n di vision in 22nd overall, a nd So.Cal. M.C.·s Ron H all took th e hono rs in ' the Senior 250 ra n ks.
