KTM's Kevin Hines now has three out of four National enduro wins under his belt. He took the Burr Oak win by three points over Dave Bertram . Burr Oak By Merle Acord ROSELA W N, IN , MAY 10 "If Kevin keeps riding so good, he's going to be hard to beat for the championship," said Husqvarna's David Bertram after learning that Kevin Hines, aboard an H&H Cycle KTM350; had posted a I7-point score at th e Mid-West National Enduro Riders M.e.hos~ed 24th An n ual BUTT O ak National Enduro. "T hey d idn' t let up o n yo u,"said Hines. " T h is wa s a real good end uro. . There wasn't a ny thing that co u ldn' t be ridden, no bottlen eck s, or im possible mudhol es. What m ad e it so tough was th ey just kept co m ing a t ya. I don't know how th ey co u ld get so many mi les o ut of th ose sectio ns. I didn't ride too good in th e morning , bu t I go t loose in the afternoon a n d I g uess I'm in good shape, for I finishe d strong." At th e second gas stop, 85.8 m iles into the 127.2 mile run , Hines had lost 13 p o ints, while .Bertram, riding a 430cc Husky, wa s do wn 15 points. T he re were th ree chec ks in the last 40 m iles with th e last 10 miles run a t30 m ph average; Hines also turned in the best sco res o f th e day th ro ugh those th ree chec ks, zeroing.the ninth check a nd dropping two eac h at 10 and II. Bert ram went zero , two a nd th ree th rough th e last three checks for hi s 20 point to tal and fin ish ed seco n d ove ra ll. H ines, with th ree wins an d one seco nd- p lace fin ish after th e fourth ro u n d of th e 12 ra ce series (w he re on ly 10 races a re u sed to determine th e winner) ca n break Husqvarna's grip o n th e National Enduro Champi onship that begin with " Ki n g Ri chard" Burleson 's eight yea r reign in th e mid- 70s a n d co n t i n ued , unbrok en into th e T erry . Kawa saki 's liquid sm oo th J eff , Fredette, rid ing a KDX200, stepped out of character a rid touched a tree in th e first sectio n wi ping o ut his front fen der headlight a nd electron ic ti me -kee p i n g eq ui p men t. But Fredette was up to the challenge o f manually divi d ing by two and mul ti pl ying by five, dropping 21 points for third overa ll. " It cos t me a point or two n ot to ha ve th e computer," sa id Fredette, " b ut what hurt the most was not h aving a few more ccs, so I co u ld run faster in th ose long sa ndy sections. I was com ing in o n th e wrong side of the flip ca rds b y j us t seco nds." High poi nt A rider, Kurt H ough riding a CR250 from Greenros e H onda , a lso had an en counter with a tree. " I' ve hi t trees before," sai d H ough disp layi ng a bark burn from his right wri st to th e shou lder, " bu t this tree I shou lder bl ocked. It didn't tip m e over but it sq uee zed a ll th e a ir right out o f me and I had trouble ge ttin g m y breath; it was a while before I felt all ri!?ht again." (H o ugh wa s down 17 pomts going into th e last 40 mile loop and th en ballooned to 27 poin ts.) Mike T ool e stayed away from ' th e trees but still dropped 27 p oints to fini sh fourth o vera ll and th ree po ints a hea d o f fellow Husky rider J eff Russell. 'H usq vam a ri der Randy H a wk ins; recovering from kn ee surgery, rode hi s fir st Na tional o f the '87 sea son and sa id, " 1 kn ew what I wa nted to do , but I just co u ldn ' t do it . I didn't think I could lo se m y rhythm that fas t. An yway I don 't feel too bad, at least I finish ed ." (Hawkins dropped 55. ) The on ly four- stroke rider in the AAs Drew Smith (Ho n da 250 ) dropped a very respectable 37 points but sa id, "I was just hanging on out there. I felt like a high performance engine running on low-test-octane; I was pinging all over th e place. But I do want to exp ress my th anks to th e club, th ey did an exce lle nt job." Bob Bean, riding a 350cc KTM from his o wn sh o p, dropped 31 points and spoiled Husqvarna 's grip on th e top five spots i n th e Open A class. H onda rider J oe Zierman ac ed the 250cc A class with a score of 29 a nd finish ed sixth overall. Second and third required David Puch erich and Eric Huffley, both Honda riders wi th scores o f 35, to go to th e tie-breaker. Puch erich got th e nod. Fo urth a nd fifth between Rodney Wink a n d Kevin Hiller a lso needed th e tie breaker aft er both dropped 45; Rodney got the win. Kawasaki rider Harvey Whipple won the 200cc A class despite p roblems with a sh oc k bolt i n th e third loop. " It wouldn't have been so bad ," • sai d Harvey, " b u t I carried th ose points through th e last three ch ecks, and to m ak e it worse I h ad time to fix th e problem. I sa t th ere at th e last reset waiting to leave and when I got ready to leav e I found out the sh ock wouldn't work." Chuck Crai g, from Des Moines, Iowa, had a different sort of time problem. Craig won th e Seni or A class riding a 430cc Husky, dropping 49 p o ints but was h av in g trouble ge tt in g th e three ri ders h e ca me wi th, who hadn 't trophied, to wa it until trophy time.
