Adamo adm itted p us hing a little hard early in the race, but after getting his Ducati sideways, sett led in to bea t Dr. J ohn 's Moto-Cuzzi-rno u nted Doug Brau neck in th e Gran d Prix cla ss. By the end o f th e seco nd la p , Adamo led Brauneck by 2.9 seco nds, a nd th e leading pair was wa y a head o f th e Ro ger Reima n / J oh n Long duel. On la p three, Pa ulk got past Reim an to ch a llen ge Long with Church back in six th a nd fading quickl y. By lap five, Adamo had stre tched h is lead to 5. 1 seconds, but o n lap seven th at had been reduced to 3.4 seco nds. By la p 10, Adamo once aga in started pu lli ng away from Bra uneck. " I was pushing it a little h a rd ea rly ," Adamo sai d. " I backed it off a littl e after it got into some sli des. I was a littl e n ervous early and had to ca lm down." By th e 13th la p of th e 16-lap event, Adamo had ca lm ed eno ugh to lead Bra uneck by 9.4 seco nds.
