We obtained three, eq ua lly-s ized du al pur p o se m oto r cycl es - a H onda XL250, a Ka wasak i KLR250 a nd a Yamaha XT 350 (a ll 1987 models) - a nd o ur plan was to go on a o ne-da y street/ tra il ride, just to see wh at would ha ppen . We peeled off th e freeway and took to the back streets th ro ugh the sma ll town of Red la nds, where th e little d ual -purpose bikes fel t m uch more a t hom e. Alt hough I had a rid ing ja cket in my mini backpack; I kn ew it was go ing to get mu ch cooler as we sta rte d heading u p th e mountain roads , so I put off stopping. T he ride th rough town was rat her uneven tful , but we fou nd a sceni c ro ut e that kept our eyes busy. T ha t was, until the, road we were rid in g o n came to abrupt end because of cons truc tio n work. Ou r pavement turn ed into a chewed u p, d irt road, but, of course, tha t did n' t sto p us. No way . With th e su n completely down , we fin all y reac hed the base of the San Bernar din o Mountains an d began o ur long cli mb u p th e h ill.
