Echo Racing (263) leads Kayo Racing GTU (48) and Lofgren Racing Enterp rises (8 2) in GTU racing action; Kayo Racing won the class. Kayo Racing 's GTO entry (2) led most of the race until a punctured oil cooler knocked them out with 13 laps remai,:,ing. around High T ech a nd th en Seco nd City two laps la ter. The racing now began to sett le in with Kayo team s leadin!? both GTO and GTU . a nd. midway Into th e race the Kayo GTO team had bu ilt a onelap margin o n the field. The battle for second was no w betw een H yperCycle. High T ech . Second City a nd Dutchman as th ey swa p ped positions while Lockhart ra n sixth a nd GRH held seven th ; all were o n the sa me lap . By lap 44. Kayo was two laps up on th e field with Rentzell and Swims running at near record speeds. Four laps la ter the overall lead held by Kayo was reduced when th ey pitted with a rough running eng ine and no brakes. " We kn ew the pads were go ing away o n o ur last sto p." Kayo 's David G raham expla ined. "K evin didn 't want to lose the tim e to change th em a t th e time, so we left the worn o nes in. " The sto p cos t the team th ree minutes and 40 seco nds to replace th e pad s and th e rough running mot or was traced to a burned electrod e o n an N GK s pa r k plug. Returning to th e race. Kayo sti ll held the lead . but was now just under a lap in front of the field. Still o u t in front o f the GTU race was th e Kayo entry o f Rowe a nd Sloan, leading T eam Wi seco and Stillwater Ra cing's H onda Hurricane of Andy Fenwick and J ed Kiml a now in th e GTU hun t. What had been a comfortable one-lap lead for Kayo turned sour on lap 65 wh en Ren tzell pitted with oil covering himself and the fairin g o f th e GSXR. Graham and crew went to work to try and locat e th e p roblem losing valuabl e time in th e pits. It was traced to a hol e in 'the o il cooler; th ey tried to plug it and push th e bike off, but it wouldn't restart. Wh en it did, oil contin ued to run o u t o f th e coo ler. The crew franti cally tried ag ain, but th e oi l continued to ru n out of th e hole and th e Kayo bike was retired. "I got hit by a rock in the caro usel," a dejected Rentzell sa id. " I was go ing around a slower rider. he hit so me gravel on the sid e of the track as I was about to exit th e a pex of the turn, and it punctured th e oil coo ler." . With Kayo Racing out of th e running and only 13 laps remaining, th e entire com plexio n of the race cha nged. Seven team s were now o n the lead lap a nd all were strong . eno ugh to tak e th e win if any others faltered . It was now a l3 -lap sprint race to th e checker for thos e rem aining o n the lead lap. Close to 18 seco nds separated th e leaders High T ech Ra cing from H yp er-Cycl e. Dutch man Racing and Second City. Another 10 seconds beh ind Second City was Miam i-Vice Racing, Lock-' ha rt a nd GRH Racin g. At thi s point, Dutchman was the team on the move with Brauneck making up ab out two seco nds eac h lap a nd closing fast o n H yper-Cycle. However. Dutchman still had to mak e a stop for fu el aro u nd th ree laps from the finish. " We ca n' t go th e distance." Dutchman 's crew chief J erry Pels said. " We'll have to sto p for fuel two o r three laps from th e end." At th is point in the race if anyone mad e the slightest mi stake. it cou ld mean the differen ce betw een winning and losing. Miami-Vice's race came to an end with 10 laps remaining wh en Steven s lost his brakes going into turn one a nd crashed. The gap conti nued to close as H yper-Cycle held the lead with High Tech seco nd and Dutchman third. All were without brakes. b ut not giv ing any quarter in going for the win . Dutchman 's charge ended with th eir lat e ga s stop while High T ech and Second City were running nos e to no se throu gh out th e infield port io n while trading places. At the checker ed flag it was H yperCycle taking th e win. a brakeless High T ech second after holding off the charges of thi rd - place Seco nd City Raci ng. Dutchman Racing. also with no brakes, finished fourth with Lockhart fifth and G RH Racing sixth. " We were just taking it easy in practice trying to learn the track a litt le at a time," Herzog sa id. " We wanted to be co nsisten t. We ran out of brake fluid around the third ho ur, bu t our pads held up pretty well. We used a hard compound pad for this track and they worked great. Bra uneck wou ld have caught us if they didn't make that last stop for fuel." " We lost our brakes with about an hour left and we don't hav e quick release brakes," High Tech 's Juerink sa id. " It would have cost too much time cha nging them so we finis hed th e race on th em ." Taking their seco nd GTU win of th e season was th e Kayo Racing GTU team. "We had a gr eat day. things went o ur wa y a nd we rode a good, trouble free race." , Kayo's T ommy Sloan said with teammat e Rowe adding, "We were consistent and had good preparation to begin with. Stillwater R aci n g to ok second followed by Team Wis eco: After three rounds, the Asphalt Aviators, a GTU team. leads the seri es after a 15th overall and sixth in class with 1544 points. Kayo Racing is now second with 1461 points. The Mid-West reg ion sprint series was on tap with four rac es Saturday before the sta rt of the endurance race. The six-lap sprint fina ls had Middleweight Supersport for Novices UI= first . In a close race with Bruce Ba in , Ernest Oxen knecht and Mike jobe, new mid-w es t Novice sensation Doug Callies continued his string of wins by taking the wiri on a Honda Hurricane. The Midd lew eight Supers port race for Experts turned into a battle between rookie Expert Scott Zampach, Ed Key and Kevin Rentzell. Zampach led flag-to-flag. but had to contend with a hard-charging Rentzell two laps from th e end. Rentzell had started near th e back of the pack. b ut got around Key on th e start ol lap. five and began to close on Zampach . Coming out of turns 13 an d 14, Rentzell was on Zampach's rear tin and all set for a slingshot pass as they headed up the straight. Zampach held off Rentzell 's charge at the flag a nd won by half a tire length. Rentzell contin ued to have th e hottest win string in th e nation in sp ri nt races as he took five wins o n Sunda y.
