Honda/Silkolene/ Arai 's Cooper was impressive in his first heat as he managed th e weekend's only successful pass over a jump. going by Jones. Jones later crashed back to a fifth pl ace finish, while Cooper flew to th e wi n over Andrews and Surratt. Cooper also pocketed a $500 bonus as the wi n ner of th e weekend's fastest heat. In hi s second heat. Cooper made a spectacular effor t to go by lead er Fri sz in midai r but fell a few turns later. A second sp ill held Coope r to a fifth -place fin ish, whi le Frisz held for the win over Hi cks. T he first 125cc hea t saw Turpin notch a runawa y wi n over Andrews and Crozier. bu t a t th e start of hi s seco nd time o ut Turpin's m oun t was disabl ed in a first turn cras h. H icks earned his on ly win of th e weekend aft er holdin g off Andrews in a startto-finish dice. Turpin very nearl y mi ssed th e sta rt o f th e last chance qualifier as he a nd mechani c Bubba Graham had run int o problems replacing the bike's front wheel and front brake system . Crozier nailed th e· ho leshot while Turpin go t away at midpack. On lap four. Turpin moved into second. On the same lap. Crozi er pu t hi s front wheel on th e wrong side of a turn marker a nd sur rendered the win to Turpin. Ma in The 250cc main event saw J ones and Cooper qu ickl y m o ve p as t Andrews to begin a fierce ba ttl e for th e lead . Pederson suffered a very poor sta rt but by lap four he had advanced to fifth. Several laps later . J ones had ga ined five seconds of breathin g room a head of Cooper. while Pederson slipped past Frisz a nd DeHoop for third. On the next lap Cooper go t o u t of shape in th e whoops and was on th e ground long eno ug h for Pederson to tak e over second spot. J ones held o n to win o ver P ed er son . w h i le Co oper remounted to tak e thi rd over DeHoop. The start of th e 125cc main saw Turpin grab th e h o leshot with Surratt in tow. Out of th e first turn. however. Surratt was fourth behind Ca rste n . Andrews and Turpin . "Someone h it th e side of me and nearly knocked me down," Surratt la ter expla ined. Six la ps into the ra ce, T u rp in lost co ntrol in the whoops a n d dropped to fourth. Andrews n ow h ad th e lead o ver Carsten and Surratt. On th e next lap Surratt dropped Carsten to thi rd a nd set o ut after Andrews. With two laps rem aining Surratt made a good effort to pass but Andre ws held for the win over Surratt. Jones had sta lled in th e first-turn mel ee a t th e start but charged th ro ugh traffic for a thirdplace finish. T ur p in su ffered a latelap spill and fini shed eig h th. " My concentra tio n was wa y off a n d I ke pt sc re w i ng u p , " sai d Turpin. Winner Andrews said, " I was ho pin g I could beat Turpin and Surratt to nigh t.
