Despite suffering two flat tires. former Rosarito Beach winner Craig Adams (right) piloted his H.onda CR500 to f ifth overall . Overall w inner Randy Morales guides his Honda XR600 across the finish line. beating Randy Norman and Martin . First and second place finishers. Randy Morales (left) and Randy Norman (right) celebrate. Norman crashed once on the last lap. The start of the 138-mile race sees Morales (5 ) jump into the lead but he was passed by Bruce Ogilvie. who later dropped out. winners pop out at the end of the finish chicane sporting ear to ear .grm s. No one was happier this year than overall winner Morales. The American Honda/Bridgestone/ Answer/ Scott USA/Hondaline Chemicalssponsored rider led the fall beach race four times but had not won the 100. "I really wanted this win," said the former two-time Baja 1000 winner. "I got the ho leshot at the start, then 1986 winner, Ogi lvie came by on his XR600 H o nda and I followed him for most of the first lap until I caught a big rock off his rear wheel with my arm. Made my arm numb, so I passed him." Mora les was never headed for the win as Ogilvie suffered clu tch probl em s at the start of the second lap co ming into the LaBhrca corner. "This co urse is probably the best one they have had," said Ogilvie. "They took out a lo t of the really high-speed stuff, ad ded an extra mile in town and ran us through some mud on the backside of a field." Grand Sport tire-sponsored, Norman also enjoyed the course on the way to his second overall finish and picked up the top money in the Grand Sports Challenge, which paid out to the first three overall finishers who ran Grand Sports front and rear. The only thing Norman wished for at the finish ' was a front row start which would have kept him out of the dust, "T hough I really didn't have anyone to race with after the third la p, I knew I wasn't going to catch Randy (Morales) and it may be a good thing since I'm a Hilltopper and some might think that gave me an advantage. But I wasn't even allowed out of tow n and had other jobs to keep me bu sy. My only rea l problem ca!TIe o n the last lap when I got knocked down by three four-whee lers. 1 don't like raci ng with the Q uads." . Most of the two -wheel riders also complained about the racing tactics of the fou r-wheelers. Next year the problem will probably be resolved by giving them a separate race or allowing them the beach course event only wh ere they won' t mix it up with the two-wheelers. In fact, th is will very likely be the last Gran Prix to run through the town each la p. The last minu te addition of another mi le through town occurred when a land owner blocked a righ t of way through his property after earlier agreeing to allow the course to pass. The additional amount of dust bothered the residents and next year's race will see some changes. Another former Ro sa r i to 100 winner, Craig Adams took fifth overall/ Open Expert on his 500cc ' Honda, after dealing with two flat tires. Former Speedway Champion, Mike Bast (5OOcc Kawasaki) finished second Open Expert Veteran to Danny Sanchez 500cc Honda), while Baja/SCORE veteran Lynn McGraw topped the 250cc Expert Senior class on his Honda CR. J ack Bongiovanni finished 11th overall on his way to the 250cc Amateur class win on a Honda. Overall the Hil ltoppers, a long with their wives and women frie nds deserve a lot of praise for their professiona ll y run and scored race. Keep in g trac k of 577 riders in all their classes and brands was very well done. T here was one problem th is year, as the rider information packets went o ut stating the race would be five laps, instead of six. Expert 125cc winner Jones no ticed the conflict and called the club prior to the race. "I was told it could be either, depending o n possib le changes, so I brought enough gas for six laps," said Jones. Some of the riders were 'surp rised when they received a white flag on the fifth la p. Gas cans were quickly hauled back out as even the Morales team was caught off guard. A few protests were well handled, and the club also ran a video tape to back up their lap sheets and computer. • Results OPEN EX: 1. Randy Morales (Han); 2. Randy Norman (Han); 3.
