And everyo ne wh o had to compete aga ins t Stacey Co ok wondered what it is going to tak e to cat ch th e Grand Juncti on spee dster. He won a ll four or his m o tos , two each in th e 125 and 250cc Pro s. He had now won all five 125cc overalls and four of five 250cc overalls. H e annihi la ted th e 125s, winning by 18and II -second margins. Albert Fire stine easi ly fi nished second both times while ' defe nding champ Tim Buchli had to work hard to claim third eac h round. Co ok found th e. go i ng a bit tou gher in th e 250 s. Defendin g cha m p Kip Sandell fough t o rr Cook 's pressure for seven laps. Co ok was sea rch in g desperately for a pl ace to pass and finally found it dropping off a jump leading to a ISO-degr ee left-hander. Cook s tayed o n th e throttle just a little lon ger a n d sq ueezed underneath in the turn for th e lead. H e graduall y stretched that o u t to four seco n ds at th e fini sh . Sandell fini shed well a hea d of Derek Brown , Jim Mitchell a n d Corey Cope. Cook nail ed th e lead ear ly in round two and never looked back. And that wa s where th e action wa s. Cope, Sandell and Mit ch ell co ntested second early on until Cope cras hed. Shortly aft er, Brown moved up to battle Sandell and Mitch ell and th en Sandell bailed hard. Brown p us hed Mitch ell all the way to th e chec kers, but never made the pass. Mit ch ell 's 4-2 co u nt j ust ni pped Bro wn 's 3-3 for seco nd overall. . Sandell had better lu ck in th e Open Pro s as he led ro u n d one from flag-to- flag. But the rnan on th e move was Dave New ell , who ga ted seventh. H e progressivel y moved up and finished on ly two sec o n d s behind Sandell. Sandell again holeshot moto two wi th Newell and Arlo En glund in tow. This first race of th e da y was a co m bina tion or three clas ses: Premi er Open Twins (pre-'65), Premier Singles a nd Sportsman Open Twins. As th e gr een fell on m oto one , Butch Cochran with a Chenny-Tri umph pulled th e hol esh ot to lead Matt Hilgenberg's Triump h, bu t Coc hran later dropped out. Vic Johnson , on a Norton Commando, was keeping Hilg enberg at close h and , while J erry Gerk on another Triumph followed. Now in fourth overall, but leading the P rem ier class was CVRG chairman (an d road racer) Fred Mork with his newly restored ESP 500 sing le , fo ll o we d cl o sel y by the Mat chless or Larry U ba ldi . During th e seco nd moto, things were a bit different. Cochran agam pulled th e hol esh ot , but this time ran away with th e p rogram putting o n a grea t show for everyone , slid ing th e bi g T riumph twin ro u n d every turn. H ilgenberg again followed suit, but was passed by Vic J ohnson's Norton in th e ea rly stages. Late in th e rac e, however , J ohnson sta lled hi s en gi ne at th e big hairpin. thus a llowing Hilgenberg and G erk to get by, leaving himself fourth, In th e Premier class. Uba ldi with his Matchless managed to get arou nd 'th e ESO of Mork and hold o n for th e win , though Mork was the first Am at eur. . Next up wa s th e Premier Lightweight 's (p re-'65, 250cc). This race was a race of '86 CV RG Champions. Durin g the first moto, CV RG secretary, Mike Green p ulled wha t loo ked to be the h ol eshot, tha t is un til h is WC BR-Ducati Scrambler missed a sh ift , th en it was J im Keeto n with a Cl.twin-pipe all the way. followed closely by R ick Nabors on another twin pipe, and Eri c Tucker with a WCB R-BSA C IS. As the race wore on, Keeton kept on pulling away from th e Nabors/Tu cker and Tucker/Nabors battle, with Tucker finall y co m ing o n top o f Naber's cz. Ed Czajka o n a Greeves 250 held down a lonely fourth. During moto two nothi ng much changed. Keeton again was first awa y, Iol low ed b y Nabors and Tucker. This tim e th e order would remain th e sa me a ll th e wa y to th e checkered flag. In l2 5cc Sportsman ac tio n, road racer Dav e Walden cl ean ed everyone's clock o n mot o-one, and' was thus bumped to ' Expert b y th e MCMA and CVRG. Ernie Cabral , on a Suzuki, took second p lace honors in both rnotos, while Ro ry Mu scatel l on a CRI25 H o nda took a third and firs t, for second overa ll.
