Bobby Schwartz (leading) continued his hot streak in southern California speedway racing by claiming the Scratch main win at IMS. In the main Schwartz drew the inside starting position and it was going to take an awfully good gate to beat him to the first bend. The rider with the best gate was Schwartz and he seized the lead just ahead of Mike Faria, John Sandona and Oxley. Faria tried the inside line early on, but Schwartz guarded the pole and wouldn't budge. ' Schwartz blocked the determined Faria out of turn four on lap two and that was the be~nning of the end. Sandona, with hIS GM hooking up just right on the blue groove, moved up to challenge for second. Schwartz bega,n to move away from the pack while Faria tried to fend off the charges of Sandona. Sandona got inside Faria going down the back straight on the last lap, but he was still in third by the time they hit turn three. While Schwartz was breezing across the line for the win, Sandona blasted alongside Faria. When they crossed under the checkered flag it was Sandona by a matter of inches for the second spot. Sisemore hauled his Arai/Smith/ Oilzall/A&A RacinglTruman Bailey Weslake back to southern California and it paid off .in bi~ dividends. He first won his quahfier to get on the regular Handicap program. Off the 20 yard line, he won his six lap heat and then placed second to England's PhirCollins in the semi. In the main Sisemore had his work cut out for him as the names of Gary Hicks, Scotty Brown, Schwartz, Faria, Collins, Christian and Ott all loomed big. The youngster did have one advantage, he was starting off the 20 all alone and he would have the opportunity to build or lose his early lead. . Sisemore grabbed the throttle on the start and didn't look back. He had the lead and as far as he was concerned it was up to the others to wage a war for the minor placings.. Bro,wn was in second, but he was part of a three abreast battle in turn three on the first lap with HiCks and Collins. Brown came out of the bend still in second just ahead pf Hicks while Christian moved into fourth ahead of Collins. Sisemore was building a huge lead while Hicks took second from Brown at the end of lap two. Brown ended up off the groove and dropped back. It looked like Sisemore could coast to the win as Hicks couldn't make up enough ground in·the remaining laps, but on the last lap Hicks pulled to the leader's rear tire. Sisemore had blown a head gasket letting Hicks pull alongside out of the final bend. Hicks had the drive, but when they crossed the line it was Sisemore, taking his second win of the year by inches. Christian took third after holding back Ott and Faria for five laps. . Correy rode his NWVC Godden perfectly to win the Support class affair over the PPT 0'£ Bernie Tusko and Bruce Penhall protege Greg Hancock. Results SCRATCH: 1. BobbV Schwartz (Wes); 2. Leading the day's events/was the Pro duo of Spear and Mike Black. Spear piloted his Suzuki to a runaway win over Yamaha-mounted Black. Spear led both motos from gate to flag as Black struggled with bike problems and was never able to seriously challenge Spear. Buddy Morgan provided the first moto excitement 'in the 125cc Intermediate clash as he opened a commanding lead on the field by the halfway point and cruised to the checkers on his new Suzuki. The second moto didn't feature the same happy ending for the Morgan team as he fell in the finish line turn and reiQjured his wrist. Honda rider Mike Durbin took over the lead and claimed the overall win with a 2-1 score over Yamaha pilot David Hammond. Morgan placed third overall. . Honda rider Rick Gaspar bested the 250cc Intermediate class. Gaspar traded moto wins with runner-up John Singletary as fellow Yamaha rider Mark Ritson placed third. .
