Ferrell flies at Orange County By Scott Daloisio COSTA MESA, CA, ARP. 24 "Dangerous" Dubb Ferrell, who ended a year and a half retirement last August, scored his first Scratch main win on the comeback trail on KIK-FM Nightat the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa. The popular Whitter, California resident received a rousing ovatio~ from the fans at the track where he has competed since the early part of the 19705. While the fans were overjoyed by Ferrell's prowess, they were stunned by a freak accident that took Mike Far~a out of the evening's races. After Fana transferrt;d out of his Handicap heat, a fan aCCIdentally dropped his helmet from the back of the bleachers and it headed straight down on Faria. The fan hollered for Faria to move and when the Jawa factory rider looked up the helmet crashed into his face. Faria lost several teeth in the accident and needless to say he was through for the night. Back on the track it was Ferrell off the pole, on the Quaker Statei Don Faulkner/PAX/Vera's Aria Weslake into the immediate lead over Bobby Schwartz, Alan Christian and Steve Lucero. The slick riding Ferrell stuck to the pole and let the other competitors know that there was only going to be one way to get by and that was on the outside. Christian, not happy with third tried the outside of Schwanz on th~ back straight on lap one, but the defending National Champion shut '!te door on the "Big Fel1a." Chrisllan then dropped to the inside on lap two and they went at it side-byside, much to the delight of the crowd of over 5000 fans. While Christian and Schwartz were occupied with themselves ~erreU opened it up and he won hi~ first Costa Mesa Scratch main in over two years. Schwartz won the battle with Christian for second and the fans saluted both of them, but the loudest cheers were showered on long time hero Ferrell. This season the Handicap mains have been increased to eight laps, but Bobby Ott:s wi~e outside line prob~bly.had hjm gomg close to nine laps ~ distance on the way to a popular ViCtOry. Ott had to move the Balboa ImponsiCirrello Racing/S'tP/ Arai Godden all the way from the 40 for the win, but he did it like he was paintin~ a masterpiece. The white leathered Ott first began to show among the leaders on the second circuit when he passed both Dent;ty ScopeUite and Jim Sisemore. G:ett~ng past those two riders placed him 10 second and only Kevin Krugh stood between Ott and first place. Ou made his move on Krugh at the end of the third circuit and he momentarily pushed his first wheel ahead but Krugh tenaciously fought him back. Ott then mounted another ~hallenge at the halfway mark and ·it powered him into the lead and on his way to the first place paycheck. After eight circuits it was Ou by a wide mar1Pn of viClory over Krugh and Jim Sisemore. Mark Hannah led the Support class main from the tapes to the checkered flag for his initial win of the young season. Half a straight behind at the finish was second place Andy Johnson and Tony Bienert. Results SCRATCH: 1., Dubb Ferrell (Wes~ 2. Bobbv Sch_rtz (Wes). HDCP:. 1. Bobb'( Ott (Gdn); 2.
