Helping hands My hat is off to motorcycle jour· nalists Nick Tenatsch and Brent Ro~s, the Good Samaritans of the recent La Carrera race. Nick's unscheduled gas stop may have dashed his hopes for his best possible finish, but he was still competing and running at speed when he abandoned his charge to stop and assist my son, Doug, who had fallen (Doug and I were a father/son entry in the event). When Nick came upon Doug on the side of the road he stopped, turned around and went back to check on him. He then rode him, two up, to the gas stop and to medical attention. Doug was rela· tively uninjured. Brent then drove Doug onto the finish. Thank you both. Thank you also to Loyal Trues· dale, Cliff Carr and Eduardo Leon Camargo for arranging this fine event. I don't know that I've ever had more fun on a motorcycle. JACK LUEDERS·BOOTH Cambridge, MA Godspeed. Randy I t is very sad when a friend .dies and it is worse when it happens in a situation that could have been avoided. Unfortunately it did happen and we have 10 t a great friend, a road racer, and a genuine leader in our sport. Randy Maday was killed recently in an accident near the hop where he worked. He was well known here in Florida for his racing kills. When he was sidel ined after a crash be turned his skills to building race bi kes, all proven performers by those who ;'aced them. We all offer our condolences to his wife and the family he left behind. We hare your 10 s and we will miss him. Godspeed, my friend. JOE McKAY . Palm Beach, FL Less than stellar I read your coverage of the Arizona Desert Racing Association awards banquet at which Jack Lehto, pres· ident of KTM America, was present and distributing contingency prizes to top KTM finishers. My wife and I are two people who found his performance less than stellar. Our 10·year-old son, Chad, fin· ished first in the 80cc Modified class for three·wheelers. His bike is a converted 1986 KTM 80. When he rides, he wears KTM leathers and in the finishing results he lists his bike asa KTM. We hadn't expected him to receive a parts contingency, but he was called up onto the dais by the president of ADRA to receive con· gratulations and a KTM cap and coffee mug from Jack Lehto. Mr. Lehto dismissed him out of hand, by saying that KTM didn't make a three·wheeler. When I stretch the limits of my ima~ination, I can see that a parts conungency for a three·wheel KTM wasn't in Mr. Lehto's foreseen budget. However, I paid $1400 for the first '86 KTM 80 in the state of Arizona. I then spent considerably more to modify it into a threewheeler. Yet Jack Lehto didn't feel that the expense we incurred or our son's performance merited a baseball cap, coffee mug or even a simple congratulation to a 10-year·old boy. My son wa crushed. I am feeling something considerably stronger towards Mr. Lehto. One can only hope that he treats his employees and customers with more sensitivity than he d~splayed that evening. I, for on can't stretch my imagination that far. DALEPRULL Phoenix, AZ We contacted Jack Lehto and he said it was certainly not his intent to dismiss your son. Mr. Lehto, ADRA officials and KTM dealers in your area diS(;ussed your son and the possibility of presenting him "goodies" prior to the banquet, but the caps and mugs were in limited supply and scheduled to be presented to two-wheel competitors. Mr. Lehto extends an apology to Chad and says KTM "goodies" are on the way to him . .. Editor. Doing the MX shuffle Maybe someone at your office can contan the AMA about their MX and Supercross schedules. There is a Supercross race on June 13 and a National MX on June 14 according to the schedule in your Calendar section. DANMOURNI G Colorado Springs, CO Check this week's Calendar section and you'll find a revised schedule . .. Editor. Ascot trophy girl Being an ex-Ohioan, I can see Jessie Roeder's point (scantily clad trophy girl at Ascot). You don't see girls like that in Ohio, except in burlesque houses. Having lived in southern Califor· nia for over 12 years, I have gotten used to seeing more than hali nude girls, especially at the beach. Ascot's bikini contest last year was great; good thing you weren't there. Just be thankful they didn't have a (trophy) girl from Black's Beach! DAN PARTIN JR. Fullerton, CA Black's Beach is a nudist beach southem California . .. Editor. In Illinois helmet law Illinois HB-2, which calls for mandatory helmet use; is still waiting to go to the floor. It should come up in the next couple of weeks for debate. There was it bill introduced in the Illinois Senate, SB·1l2, by Senator Howard Brookins (Chicago). That bill also Called for a mandatory helmet law but it was tabled in committee. I suggest readers still write to Senator Brookins and give him your views on helmet laws. His PAUL HAYES Ottawa,IL Land closure I would like to enlighten you and other riders of a situation that has arisen in regards to enduros in the Gorman, California, area. We have been informed by the California Racing Club that the enduro scheduled to be run in the Gorman area in June has been canceled. Furthermore, there will be no events in the area for the rest 01 the year. The reason? The environ· mental analysis prepared by tht Forestry Service was inadequate, although there have been events in the area for the last eight years. What's particularly galling to mt is that one of the objectors to tht events, the Department of Fish ane Game, has petitioned througt AB364 - to remove at least 350,()()( from the Off· Highway Vehicle Fum to suppon their own projects. The~ will be using our money and at th, same time denying us access to area: that are designated for off·highwa~ vehicle use. Personally, this is my favorite pla~ and enduro riding area. I was look ing forward to this year's enduro am will miss it terribly. [ am alse realizing more and more tha t we nee< to continue to send our letters to ou government representatives .or WI will eventually have nowhere left t< ride. SHARO VARNELL Santa Monica, CJl Wind (Continued from page 2) he hopes to be back in action in timf for the DuQuoin (Illinois) Mile on July 26. Cards and Letters may bt sent to Atherton at 16689, U.S. 12, White Pigeon, MI 49099. The following is taken verbatim from a Pat MurphY'penned AMA press release: Most people have heard of Phil Collins the singer or Peter Collins the British speedway racer, but it's Phil Collins the speedway racer who is making news in Cali· fornia these days. Phil (the speedway racer) is the younger brother of Peter (the speedway racer) and has decided to come to the U. S. for the 1987 season and challenge the American shon tracks. Peter (the elder speedway racer) retired this year after a career that spanned over a decade and included world individual and team titles. Phil (the younger speedway racer) has taken up residence in Newport Beach, California, not far from Costa Mesa Speedway. In his first race of the season at Ascot Park's speedway track, Phil won the Han· dicap main event, riding from the 30·yard line. Phil (the singer) hasn't done anything lately that relates to motorcycling, but we felt he deserved another mention anyway. We'd like to add to the above by saying that while there are no jackets required while listening to Phil Collins (the singer), leathers are required when racing against Phil Collins (the speedway racer),
