High Tech Racing (Suz) finished Second with Second City Racing taking third (Suz) in the 500-kilolJ;leter race. The top six finishers in the race finished on the same lap. Kayo GTU (Hon) topped the GTU class, finishing seven th overall. The Isle of Man will continue its series of Tourist Trophy motorcycle stamps to celebrate this year's 80th Anniversary of the TT races. Five different stamps, plus a stamp sheetlet featuring all f"1V8 stamps, will be issued on May 27. One stamp will show the 1956 MV Agusta which John Surtees rode to the Senior TT Win in 1956 while another stamp will feature the Honda 250cc six-cylinder machines on which Mike Hailwood won the Ughtweight 250cc race in 1967. The weekly Wednesday night speedway races at Inland Motorcycle Speedway in San Bernardino, California, will not take place on May 13, due to the National Orange Show fair that week. Check local listings for your area. 2 HosPITal STOP: Texas dirt tracker Sammy Sweet suffered a mild concussion and a broken shoulder in a solo, turn one, practice crash at the May 3 San Jose (California) Mile. Sweet is recovering from injuries and appears to be "okay," but his Pyramid Builders Harley-Davidson is a little worse for wear. The force of the crash broke the bike's frame in half, the gas tank reportedly flew over the fence and into the crowd, and the fork legs were ripped from Two-time Grand National Champion Ricky Graham credited his third-place showing at the San Jose Mile to a pair of cerburetors he borrowed from road racer Wayne Rainey and bolted onto his RS750 Honda only 10 minutes before the start of the main event. Graham's bike was fitted with stock carburetors while Rainey's Honda was equipped with crabs and manifolds designed to work with AMA-mandated intake manifold restrictors. When the Daytona 200 winner failed to qualify for the San Jose final, he loaned Graham the use of his tric~ equipment. "If I wouldn't have got those carbs at the last second, I wouldn't have been in there:' Graham said. Graham used stock carburetors and manifolds during time trials and his heat race. Team Harley-Davidson's Scott Parker, the second-ranked National dirt tracker in 1986, wilJ compete in National Pro Twins GP road racing competition at Bryar Motorsports Park in Loudon, New Hampshire, July 19-21. Parker, who claimed third place in the Pro Twins GP final during his Camel Pro road racing debut in Daytona last March, will ride "Lucifier's Hammer," the Don Tilley prepared Harley-Davidson he piloted in Florida. The 1987 AMA Amateur/Youth Dirt Track National Championship Series, open to all AMA Amateur, Youth and Semi-Professional dirt track racers, will be held in July. Half-mile racing will kick off the championship week July 11 in Elkhorn, Wisconson. TT/Scrambles competition will follow in Union Grove, Wisconsin, on July 16, and the series will conclude with short track racing July 17 in Sycamore, Illinois. National champions will be crowned in each of the three types of racing, and Grand National titles will be awarded for the best finish in all three types of racing in a single division. At each event on the AMA Grand National Championship Series schedule Circle Bell will pay $100 to the highest finishing rookie in the Expert main event, or $50 to the highest finishing rookie in the Last Chance Qualifier if no rookies are in the main event. At the end of the season Circle Bell will award a custom commemorative belt buckle to the AMA Dirt Track Rookie of the Year. The Utah Sport Bike Association will hold seven Yamaha YSR50 Track Challenge events beginning on May 24 at the Ogden Airport Go-Kart Track in Ogden, Utah. Four of the events will be held independently, but three of the races will be run in conjuntion with the regular road race program at the Wendover Airport Track. Three-time National Enduro Champion, Terry Cunningham, returned to action during round three of the 1987 National series, May 2, in Twain Harte, California. Cunningham suffered a severe knee injury early in the year, and he finished sixth overall in California on his Husky 430cc Automatic. The AMA has announced a revised schedule for the day's activities at the AMA Grand National Championship/Camel Pro Series half mile race at Kentucky's Louisville, Downs on May 30. Registration of racers will take place between 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. with practice set to get underway at 3 p.m., time trials at 4 p.m., and racing at 8 p.m. According to AMA Dirt Track Manager J.B. Norris, the schedule has been revised to allow the track crew sufficient time to restore a cushion prior to the heat races. Another rider back on the track is defending 125cc National Motocross Champion, Honda's Micky Dymond. Dymond came down with monon ucleosis last month and return~d to racing action at the Phoenix Supercross, May 2, where he won his heat race but iinished 15th in the main. Each loop will contain a series of special test sections that will be used as the primary scoring o Ultracross, a new form of stadium motocross, was introduced at the Mickey Thompson Off-Road Grand Prix held at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, on May 2. The new Mickey Thompson Ultracross system employed a two-abreast, 10-rows-deep, inverted start. Riders were paid passing points and cash for each rider that they passed after being inverted. It was rumored that some riders sand-begged in the heat races in order to be in the forward rows to more easily win the main event. Mickey Thompson is planning on revising the inverted Start system to prevent sad-bagging in the future. Tommy Watts (Kawl won the main event from the second row and earned two passing points, Jeff Matiasevich (Kaw) cama from the sixth row, earning 11 passing points for second and Brian Manley (Yam) earned eight passing points on his way to third. The mixed crowd of truck, car, ATV, Odyssey and motorcycle fans loved the new Ultracross show. Michigan dirt tracker Brian Atherton underwent orthoscopic knee sur~ery last week at the University of Michigan Medical Center to repair tom ligaments suffered during a recent trail riding accident in northern California. Atherton, who was staying with Chris Carr following the April 11 Ascot Half-Mile, fell while the duo was trail riding and Carr inadvertantly ran over him.
