At the end of lap one the front runners included Shobert, Poovey, Boody, Parker, Graham, Jones and Pearson. Shobert and Poovey battled for the first five laps, with Poovey holding the edge. Shobert got around him for good on lap five and Parker passed Poovey on lap six to set the stage for a blistering battle between the two factory riders. With Graham and Poovey close in tow, and Chandler running a distant fifth, Shobert and Parker began swapping the lead and kept it up for 15 laps. By the midway point, a five-rider battle for sixth had developed between Morehead, Hames, Day and Scott Pearson. Parker's fight with Shobert lagged on lap 18 when he slipped off the groove comin~ out of turn two and dropped to thud, allowing Graham to move into second. The Harley rider repassed Graham, then got around Shobert going into turn three on lap 20, but slipped off the groove again coming out of turn four and dropped from first to third. For the rest of the race Parker was hampered by a fading rear tire. Chandler, unnoticed by the front four, continued to reel in the leaders from a distant fifth place. By lap 22 he was on Parker's rear fender. On lap 23 he moved into third, while Graham led Shobert. On the whiteflag lap Chandler took advantage of - knowing exactly where to run into turn three and took over the lead. Parker and Poovey rounded out the top five positions behind the . photo. finish, while Morehead topped the battle (or sixth" over Hames and Pearson. Filice finished all alone in' ninth, and filling out the field at the £Jag were Day, Boody, Jones, Scott, Eklund, and Arnaiz.
