Schwartz smokes Speedway USA By Scott Daloisio VICTORVILLE, CA. APR. 25 Victorville, California's Speedway USA opened the regular season on a warm desert night much to the delight of Bobby Schwam. Schwaru had won the Scratch main on opening night at the other four southern California tracks earlier in the month, so it was only fitting that he added Speedway USA to that list. Another large crowd streamed through the ~tes and they wimessed a thrilling mght of speedway action. Close racing and some spectacular crashes had the huge throng on the edge of their seats all evening long. This was only the third appearance at the high-desert facility by Schwaru and he spent the preliminary events trying to get the gearing sorted out on his C.T.I. Brace/ Silkolene/Justice Brothers/Cirello Racing/BeI! Weslake. By the main he had it figured out and was flying. Schwaru had worked hard for ·all of his wins thus far in 1987 so it was only fair that he finally received a little bit of luck on Saturday night. All four of the Scratch mam competitors were mounted on Weslakes and Alan Christian, out of gate two, guided his into first off the line. Dubb Ferrell used an aggressive move to push Christian back to second in tum one on the opening circuit. Christian and Schwaru became embroiled in a heavy confrontation lor second while Ferrell was building a sizeable lead. Christian and Schwaru were going back and forth for the second place spot with Christian getting past in tum one on lap two. He then gained the lead when his teammate, Ferrell, had his carburetor falloff in tum three on the second lap. The crowd roared as the aggressive Christian assumed the lead. but it wouldn't last. The white flag came out and Schwaru was closing on Christian. Even though Schwaru was closing it becatne apparent that he would not have enough time to catch him as they went down the back straight the final time. That is when fate struck. Christian's motor literally exploded in a plume of white smoke and a shower of twisted metal as he entered tum three. He coasted silently off the groove letting Schwaru by for the lead and eventual win and Brad Oxley got by for second. The fans were still buzzing about the Scratch main when the Handicap main rolled onto the track. Ed Castro's body and his KNAC/Carlisle/Arai/Lunetto Be Hegel/Matt's Machine Weslake had taken a beating from crashes by the time the Handicap main rolled around but you never would have known iL He had battled back from the crashes and from a trip to the penalty line in his semi to tum in an inspired ride for. the victory in the eight-lap main. Scott Brant. off the 20, was the initial leader. but he had Hicks Castro directly on his rear tire in turn one. The diminutive Castro immediately went to the outside and made it work as he swept around both Hicks and Brant for the lead on the back chute. Andy Northrup rode a smooth race and passed Hicks for third when the latter parked coming off a comer. Northrup later moved into second when Brant drifted off the groove late in the race. Castro had it in the bag, but Hicks had worked his way back to challenge Northrup for second. It then became apparent that Castro was tiring with less than two circuits to go. Fortunately the checkered flag flew for Castro, who was just in front of Northrup and Hicks. Scott Hodgson, on the Huey's/ King Embroidery Jawa, was in second when Jess Finch had a spectacular crash in tum two on the third lap. Out came the red flag and Finch was kicked out giving Hudgson the win in the Support class main. Results SCRATCH: I. Bobby Schwanz lWat 2. Br-.l Oxley (W..t 3. Alen Chriatien (W"l. HDCP: 1. Keeping in focus with the rest of the pack, Carl Vaillancourt made a pass on Farkas and moved into fourth. Trying to hold onto his spot. Vaillancourt went down in the rockers but lost no position. Later, though, his luck changed and with McIlvaine passing him for fourth. Farkas kept on the gas to finish fifth. Overall placings went to Dorschug. Bao, Carroll, McIlvaine and Farkas.
