Couto cruises at LA CoulltyMX By Tami Rice Brian McElroy swept to two moto wins to grab the top spot in the 125cc Expert class at Dade City Raceway. McElroy dominateS DadeCityMX By Athie SanderS DADE CITY, FL, APR. 12 Brian McElroy and Steve Martin claimed overall wins in their respective 125cc and Open Expert classes, during round four of the Supersports-Tampa Amateur Supercross Qualifying Series at Dade City Raceway. Gary Paul jammed his Kawasaki ahead of McElroy and Thomas Rice to claim the lead at the start of the first l25cc Expert moto. Rice got around McElroy but not to stay. McElroy wasted no time reeling in Paul. With pressure rising, the leader went down in a tum. McElroy and Rice cruised by. Paul got back on the gas and rode in a lonesome third place position. McElroy held on to take the win with Rice not far behind. Paul later said, "I wasn't tired, but it just got too hot out there. My from tire kept washing out and I crashed. " When asked if he was going to ride the Tampa Supercross Paul said, "No I don't think so, I've got a prom that night. I had already asked my girl and didn't realize it was the same night." He added, "I don't think she would rather go to the Supercross." McElroy's Kevin Gilleland prepared-bike jumped out front to lead Paul, Rice and M~k Campbell ipto the first turn at the start?f moto two. At the end of the fust lap Campbell wem down. He slowly remounted then pulled into the pits. Paul's front tire again washed out taking him down. Rice charged into second but was well behind McElroy. Rice continued to pull away from Paul, leaving the field well spread. McElroy took the easy win with Rice and Paul following in the distance. John Collins holeshot the first Open Ex~rt moto with Alan Crum and Kralg Constantino pushing from behind. Martin opened up the throttle to charge up and ride behind the leader by lap two. Constantino fought to hold off Jon McCabe. McCabe stayed on his tail until he found an open line then dove on by. Collins cruised on in for an easy win ahead of Martin, Crum, McCabe and Cole. Martin took control at the start of the second moto leaving Crum, McCabe and Cole to follow. The leader pulled slightly away. McCabe pushed Crum, battling for the second place position. Several laps later McCabe ~ot around Crum then left him behind. Martin took the win, and the overall, as McCabe, Crum and Cole followed. McCabe's 4-1 moto tally was good enough for second overall. Pat McLain took the holeshot in the first 250cc B moto bu t lost the lead to Chuck Sybert, who went on to take the win ahead of Steve Young, McLain, Tommy Knapp and Tom Currey. Sybert blasted into the lead at the stan of the second moto but was passed by McLain late in the race. McLain went on to win the mota with Sybert taking second. IS Less than perfect weather didn·t slow down Colin Couto at the CRC's Saturday MX at LA County Raceway. Couto posted a 2-1 score to edge out Bill Dawson's 1-2 for the overall win in the SOcc Stock Novice class. Suzuki-mounted Shawn Burke took the holeshot in moto one followed closely by Couto and Dawson. By lap two Couto had slammed past Burke for the first place slot and Dawson turned up the pressure on Burke for the second place position. Dawson's pressure paid off as he got by Burke and moved in on the leader Couto. The two leaders battled for the rest of the race, with Dawson managing to force his way past Couto late in the race for the win. In the second moto Couto pulled the holeshot, with Dawson in second. Dawson was ridinR on the edge and managed to pass Couto for the lead, but Dawson's lead only lasted two turns as he overshot a berm and Couto re-took the lead. Dawson shadowed Couto for most of the moto, but crashed in the latter stages of the race, allowing Couto to ta~e the win by a comfortable margm. The 125, 250cc and Open Pros and Intermediates ran together, with a split start. Honda-mounted Jonny Zahrt took the Pro class overall with a 1-1 score, despite running the second moto with a flat tire. Brad McLeod was second overall with a 2-2 tally. Results 60 O·B: ,. Heisler, Myatt score at Wares Ferry MX By Hugh Gatlin. MONTGOMERY, AL, APR. 12 Local pro Darryl Heisler and Purvis, Mississippi's Glen Myatt turned in winning rides at round three of the $6000 Alabama/Georgia Champion- , ship Series hosted by Wares Ferry I MXPark. Hallman Racing-backed Heisler took the win in the l25cc Pro class and finished second behind. series leader David Kelley in the 25Occ·Pro division. Myatt rode a pair of Kawasaki of Hattiesburg sponsored machines to first overall in the Open B class and third place in the competitive 250cc B class. Tracy Whaley grabbed the hole- ) shot in the first 125cc Pro moto and led for two laps before Wallace 1 Fincher moved out front. At the 1 halfway point Heisler slid his way > around the outside of Fincher and into the lead, only to go down in the back section of the course. I Fincher went back ou t front and took ) the win while a steady Tommy I Martin placed second. Heisler took the second moto holeshot with Martin close behind. Fincher was moving up when he bailed off over the triple jump and went down hard. Heisler led Martin to the flag with Whaley taking third. Heisler led the first 250cc Pro race followed by Kelley and Martin: Kelley put his Yamaha of Prattvillebacked 250 YZ out front early and the top positions remained steady until the end. Behind the leaders, Jack Ellison and Earl May staged a hard-fought battle for fourth. Late in the race Ellison went down off the triple and May was able to secure the fourth spot. ( Kelley pulled the second motQ holeshot and quickly stretched his lead. Martin buckled down and began triple jumping in the stadium section, giving himself a two-second cusbion over Heisler. Ellison was able to shake off his first moto ~
