The #1 CR Support Dealer Has Them OW!!! ~ .. his Yamaha YZ 250 topped veteran Expert Davey Grimes and defending District 5 champ David Bachman_ Coombs' 125cc A win was a bit more difficult as expert up-and-comers Shane Siother, Randy Miller, and Craig Brooks, all Honda-mounted, gave the winner all he wanted. Miller ended up second overall with Brooks third. Mike Sigmund and Norm Bish each got a chance to beat up on B classes as Sigmund went I-I in the Open ranks while Bish swept the 2505. Dave Papi and Greg Payne were the respective runner-ups. In the 125cc B division Kawasaki-mounted Jody Shearer and Brian Patterson each took turns at the head of the class, but in the end Shearer's 2-1 meant the win. McDonald sweeps Steel City MX By Davey Coombs DELMONT, PA, APR. 12 Milc:e McDonald piloted his Suzukis to a four moto sweep in the 85cc 14I~ and I25cc Schoolboy classes at the rain-soaked 1987 opener of Steel City USA Raceway. The Gibsonia Cytlebacked 15-year-old gathered the only double class score of the day, though he was joined by Bobby Grega (Open A), Dave Santi (250 A), and Davey Coombs (125 A) in sweeping Expert class wins. The Pittsburgh area facility, site of the August 16 U.S. 125cc Grand Prix, was the victim of a steady rainfall that kept the course saturated throughout the day. Traction was minimal for everyone while tear offs were at a premium. McDonald took his first win during the morning session (Steel City employs a split program that includes racing the Minis and Novices in the morning while holding off Expert and B class practice until the early afternoon). Gating first in moto one of the 85cc class, McDonald fought off a race-long assault by Yamaha rider John Bogovich and Samuel Williams to card the win. When the riders went to the line for the second moto Bogovich was a no-show as Kawasaki rider Rodger Molnar and Dewey Hauser picked up the slack. McDonald was still unstoppable in the storm and he carded the second moto win with a start-to-finish effort. Hauser carne through in second for the runner-up spot in the 'overall tally with Wilhams third. The Senior class was the most hotly contested division of the day as part-time professional motocrosser John McConnell went up against Dave Coombs, of Blackwater 100 fame. The muddy track proved to be in Coombs' favor in moto one as he reeled in the fast-starting McConnell late in the race to nab the win. In the second go-around McConnell held the lead from startto-finish to take the first place plastic from Coombs. Kawasaki-mounted Tom Portman and ranking AMA District 5 official Keith Biddle went 3-4. The 6O-plus riders that appeared for the 125cc C class were spIn into two separate groups, allowing Tony Waugamun an!! Danny Garver to each take home first place prizes. Waugamun (1-1) was followed by Mike Reesman and Ralph Freedman while Garver (4-1) bested John Rhine and Dave Danko. The 250cc C class saw John Weightman go 2-1 to best the 1-2 tally of David Morris while West Virginia's Mark Hamilton scored a victory in the Open C class with a I-I finish ahead of ButchHitt and George Welchey. In the afternoon's Expert classes, Grega and Santi dominated their respective clasSes, each leading every lap of both motos. Behind Grega's super-fast Kawasaki came Jim Young and Senior Tom Portman. Newell nails BerfhoudMX By Larry Johnson BERTHOUD, CO, APR. 5 Andy Atkins top~ the 80cc Expert division at Prairte Hills PromotIons MX with the Open Pros and 80cc Experts going for double points under a new format by the SRAC this season. Dave Newell took full advantage of the opportunity by capturing the Open Pro class with a perfect I· I tally. Newell led each moto from start· to-finish, and never received much threat from either primary challenger, Arlo Englund or Jim Thompson_ Vickery Motorsport-backed Atkins retaliated for two earlier losses to teammate Scott Fulcher in the 80cc Expert class. Fulcher took the holeshot in moto one ahead of Atkins, then Atkins bailed three turns later. Jeremy Middaugh started pressing Fulcher, but crashed in the same spot as Atkins did. This gave Fulcher a good-sized lead, which he held for two laps. Atkins was driving hard and caught up to Fulcher, then outbraked him in a right-hander and took the lead. Fulcher regained the lead on the next lap, but Atkins took it back for good down in the' same area of the track. Fulcher spun out a few turns later, and barely held back George Peasley fOT the remainder of the moto. Atkins looked to have everything wrapped up in round two when Fulcher's chain broke early in lap one. But Atkins crashed ri~ht after the white flag, allowing Middaugh to close the three-second gap. The twosome traded the lead dunng the lap, with Middaugh making an
