Kye Gunn (62) grabbed victories in three classes at the third round of the Arizona State Road Racing Championship at Firebird Raceway. Marc Shaffer piloted his brand new Yamaha FZR1000 to the finish line for the Unlimited class crown ahead of Yamaha FJllOO-mounted Dan Brown; Shaffer's Yamaha sustained fairing damage early in practice when a 12-inch square metal cover was thrown up by another motorcycle. Shaffer continued on without incident. ScOtt Willock took the Middleweight class win on his Yanlaha of Tucson/Star Cycle/Spark's Cycle Supply FZ600. Michael Ross took a distant second in that class in his first race since crashing in January. Mark Hensley's Rising Sun Cycle-backed Yamaha RZ took an uncontested Lightweight class win. No sooner had Gunn pitted aftet the Production race than he was back out on the track to contest the Heavyweight Superbike class. Kelly Byrd took the holeshot and opened up an early lead only to pull off after eight laps with gearbox problems. Gunn took the lead from Cesmot .and raced home to victory number two. Gunn went out in the very large Unlimited/Middleweight Superbike race and stole the show, scoring his third win in as many tries. Scott Thomas took second behind Gunn with Henry Tecza trouncing the 14 bike field of Middleweights ahead of Dale Keiffer and Scott Willock. Nineteen bikes gridded for the Formula class race with Robert Utley's Suzuki GSXR leading the way with Gunn and Dave Coons in hot pursuit. The leading trio quickly pulled away from the field, but by lap three Gunn had slowed noticeably and was trying to shake some feeling back into his hands down the straightaway. Gunn ran off the track on lap five as Utley and Coons continued to battle. Gunn reentered the race but at a much slower pace, gamely working his way back to fourth in class. Utley pulled out all the stops to beat Coons and claim the overall win and first in class. Results NOV: 1. Adam Lee (Kaw); 2. Stave Jansan (Kaw); 3. Scon Cusack (Kaw); 4. Mark Spoonamora (Kaw); 6.
