Mike Faria won the Scratch Main
at Costa Mesa.
the usual four laps as well as the extra
three that an official's error tacked
on.
Faria was out of gate two for the
main with Christian off the pole.
Both riders had come into the main
undefeated in the Scratch preliminaries. Faria got the gate over
Christian, Steve Lucero and· Oxley.
Oxley quickly got by Lucero and
stayed in third for all four laps.
At the end of lap three the white
flag failed to come ouL At the end
of lap four the checkered flag failed
to come out. The riders continued
to race around the track while the
riders in the pits had a good laugh.
The fans were confused but at the
end of six laps the starter finally went
for the white flag and, mercifully,
the checkered waved at the end of
lap seven. The fans had now realized
that a mistake had been made and
they gave a sarcastic cheer at the end
of the event. The order of finish at
both four laps and eight laps was
Faria, Christian, Oxley and Lucero.
Bernie Tusko (TEP/Pro Design/
Jet Set Tuning PPT) grabbed the
honors in the Support class main for
the first time in 1987 over Randall
Dance.

Bertilno blasts
PelOn ST
By Bill Holt
PEKIN, IL, APR. 12
Reed Bertilno kicked off the AMA
District 17 Dirt Track Series in the
right way Sunday as he walked away
with first place in the 500cc class.
This was the first race of the Pekin
Motorcycle Club's DC Cycle/Megacycle/Motorcycle Center of Lombardsponsored series.
Twelve riders lined up for the
500cc final and it was heat race
winner Wymond Schleyhahn who
grabhed the early lead. Schleyhahn
led the pack for five laps, but a
mistake in tum two let Bertilno slip
by and he went on to take the win.
A good battle took place for third
spot between Bart Schmulbach and
Aaron Crockett. Schmulbach held on
to take third by inches at the checkered flag.
Schmulbach, Jim Hauptman and
Greg Sauder led the pack into turn
one in the 250cc final. By the end
of the first lap Hauptman had
snatched the lead and never looked
back. Schmulbach moved Sauder
back to third on lap six and the top
three held all the way to the checkers.
