The fans in attendance were greeted by a brand new format but a familiar face returned LO the winner's circle as defending National Champion Bobby Schwartz edged Mike Faria to win the Scratch main event. Silkolene/CTI Brace/Bell/ Cirello/Oakley Weslake-mounted Schwartz, fresh off his win the previous evening at Ventura, had to contend with Mike Faira, Rob Pfetzing and the surprising Louis Kossuth in the main event. Schwartz was first to leave the gate from position two over Kossuth and Faria. Faria had won his previous four starts on the nighl and by passing Kossuth on lap one he was in a position to try and make it five in a row. Faria's first challenge came off turn four on the opening lap. Faria moved to the outside in a bid for the lead bu(Schwartz anticipated the move and shut the door. Faria dropped to the inside going down the back chute on lap two and he started to pull alongside the leader but Schwartz kept the throttle on and he beat Faria to turn three. After two laps Faria had tried both the inside and the outside in an attempt tp get by and both had failed. His next move was to rub his front tire against Schwartz's left leg in turn one on lap three. Once again Schwartz hung tough. Schwartz opened up a little breathing room later in the lap and even though Faria challenged again on the final circuit, it was clear to see that Schwartz would not be denied and he had the IMS opener and he took home a big silver cup to prove it. Part of the new program was the changed Handicap main vent. It was billed as eight riders battling for eight laps. They had the eight riders but a red flag cut the event short and the first full eight-Iapper was put off for at least a week. The six laps that were completed were thrilling to say the least. Ken Berry, who got into the main after starting in the qualifiers, came off the zero line for the initial lead over Kevin Krugh and Sacramento's Jim Sisemore. Sisemore wrestled second away from Krugh before the end of the opening lap and began to stalk Berry. Gary Hicks manned the third Spot but he came together with Sisemore and Berry in turn two on lap two and went wide. Berry and Sisemore recovered and Faria shot by Hicks for third. The race was turning into a war and the fans were loving every second of it. Bobby Ott joined the fray when he went to the extreme outside and tried to overtake Faria for the third spot but he could not get quite enough drive. He eventually fell in turn one on lap four and that ended his evening. Sisemore and his Arai/Smith/ OilzalllA&A Racing/Truman Bailey-sponsored Weslake went to the inside and passed Berry on lap five. Faria and Hicks also moved by with Faria jumping all over Sisemore. The action continued until turn four on lap six when Berry and Krugh tangled bringing out the red £Jag and ending a wild battle_ Sise· more LOok the season opening win ' just inches ahead of Faria. . Tony Bienert, from the High Desert, rode the ex-Gene Woods dual-port exhaust Godden to the win in the Support class in front of Bernie Tusko and Don Ambrose. Results SCRATCH: J.. Boston invades ColumbiaMX By Brad and Sharon Jones COLUMBIA, MO, MAR. 22 Mike Boston made the long trip from Crete, Nebraska, to challenge Missouri's best riders, and once again came out on top. In moto one, Bill Davis headed the pack with some very impressive lap times that neither BOSLOn or Jeff Schumacher could match Boston. With a lap to go, Schumacher slipped by for second, leaving Boston in third and Bart Shiflett in fourth. In moto two, it was Schumacher taking the holeshot, with Boston second and Bill Davis in midpack. Davis went berserk, passing riders, but found himself dead last after a bad crash. Boston pushed Schumacher for several laps, until Schumacher missed a turn, and Boston flashed by. Schumacher's bike soon seized, putting him out of the race. Mike Stahlman inherited second while Robert Motsinger finished third. Davis put on quite a show, passing riders all the way to the finish line and finally finishing sixth. Coupled with his first moto win, Davis still managed a second overalL In the 250cc Experts, Schumacher took the first moto win. In moLO two, Boston put in a great ride, beating out the "Schu".
