Team Husqvarna's Dave Bertram picked up second overall via his lower point total o,n the tie breaker. - Jeff Irwin dropped 12 points, but was edged out of second by Bertram on the tiebreaker. Pete Postel piloted his Honda CR125R to first place in the 200cc A class at the Fool's Gold National. AMA National Champ~onship Enduro Series: Round 2 . Hines'captures Fool's Gold crown By Mike Larson GEORGETOWN, CA., APR. II Kevin Hines guided his 350cc KTM to the overall victory by a slim margin at Saturday's Fool's Gold National Enduro. Hines' performance edged out Husky pilots Dave Bertram and Jeff Irwin by one point after the I03-mile contest. Hines dropped II points while Bertram and Irwin both posted 12 point totals, with Bertram taking the runner-up spot via his better score on the tiebreaker. Irwin was followed by Team Green Kawasaki rider Larry Roseler and Husqvarna's Jeff Russell to round out the top five overall. CERA-North laid out a challenging course that wound through the senic EI Dorado National Forest. The club drew 540 riders for the event and 373 of those riders finished the run. The A riders went the full 103 mile distance and the C riders put in an 85 mile run. A light rain Friday night ~ade for good traction and very little dust. , The run only had one snag and that was with check nine, where the clock was off 12 minutes, everyone's scores were adjusted accordingly and with little complaint. Hines was happy with his overall win but felt he could have ridden a little better. "I didn't have a real good ride, I made a few little mistakes, but you've only got to win by a second to get the overall. I was after the points for the championship. "I didn't have any real big problems, but there was this one little section called 'The Spillway,' I got stuck in there and couldn't get my bike through. That cost me 45 seconds or so, I couldn't go through and I had to pull my bike back and go around," said Hines. "Aside from that the bike worked supt;T and the run was good, they did a good job. I've got to thank Mark 0>llt;r from Z Racing and Barry HIggms for helping me along this season." IrWIn was k.nocked out of second overall by Bertranl's 407 to Irwin's 556 at the tiebreaker. Irwin said, "I just didn't go fast enough I guess. The bike worked good and I didn't crash too many times, I just kind of chugged along. The four-stroker worked really good on these trails." Irwin was thankful for the rain the prior evening. "It's a good thing that we got that rain yesterday," said Irwin. "It would've been very dusty without it. The trails are pretty beaten in because a lot of people play ride here, so that makes it a pretty high speed run. We could almost average 24 mph on everything. We were racing a lot, but we didn't drop very many points." Roseler was pleased with his fourth overall since he was still nursing a shoulder injury. "Two weeks ago I hurt my shoulder at a local Gran Prix. I wanted to come up here and at least make an appear- ance and try to do good. I'm just a little tenative with my shoulder. It's just really sore. ,"I didn't think I would be able to win, I just wanted to put in a good ride and a~tually I did," said Roeseier. ''I'm also working with Kawasaki on an off-road program so I -wanted to .put in some mC?re time on the bike. I thought the course was fantastic, the last loop for the A's was really good." Drew Smith carded a seventh overall finish aboard a Cycle News Honda XR250 test bike and felt good about his finish. "In the last loop I missed the reset and I think I threw away a couple of points there, but otherwise I felt that I did good. The bike was great, really I was surprised, since it only had about two and a half hours of preperation, it was terrific. I'm real happy, considering I had to come out here and borrow the bike." Other winners in the A classes were Peter Postel, who claimed the 200cc A class honors aboard his Honda . CR125R, Donnie Simone and Jeff Naff filled out the top three in the class. The Open A and 250cc A classes were claimed by John Nielsen and Bob Twilliger, repectively, while the Senior and Super Senior A dvisions were topped by Richard Christian and Bob Swanson. The Vet A class went to Craig Fator. In the B class Richard Bishop claimed the overall and was first in the 250cc B ranks. First overall in the C division was Honda-mounted Dan Sell. Second C rider was C 200cc
