Brace/Bell/Cirello Weslake, look second in his heat race behind winner Dubb Ferrell, but he came back to capture both the semi and the main event. The main event featured the same four riders as the previous evening at Ascot South Bay Stadium. Schwartz drew the pole with former ational Champion Alan Christian OUl of two, Mike Faria OUl of three and Steve Lucero on the outside. Christian gated the field and he led until turn four on the opening lap. At that point Schwaru took the lead and he was headed for another triumph. Faria followed Schwartz past Christian and the battle was on for the lead. Schwartz held him back until Faria tried to make a move on the back straight on the final lap. He attempted to pull alongside the leader but they made minor contact and Schwartz edged him into tum three. Faria made one last try as they came off four on ,the last· lap but Schwaru again held him back to win. Christian took third, chased home by Lucero. The Handicap main started out being a knock-down, drag-out affair. The red flag flew twice before they ever made it by the first bend and northern California champ Bart Bast was sent to the penalty line. Jimmie O'Dell, from the 20, took the lead on the third start ahead of Ohio native Scotty Brown and Schwartz. Schwartz's clutch was hot after the restarts and Brad Oxley quickly relegated him back to third. Brown was all over O'Dell for the lead with Oxley just inches back in third. The eight-rider freight train circled the track in tight formation much to the delight of the opening night fans. Even though Brown challenged for the lead most of the way he was the first rider to fall out of line on lap six when he slipped off the &l:oove and he had to watch. as four nders went by before he could get back in line. The race seemed to belong to O'Dell and it would have been his firsl ever main event triumph at the famedOranse County facility. Then, while countmg his paycheck, O'Dell tired on the final lap and he left a small hole fOT Oxley as they came off turn four. Oxley and his Coorsl KLOS/Cirello/Scott Goggles/HalIman Weslake punched on lhe opportunity andled the final 50 feel to collect the checkered flag. Christian also took advantage of the miscue and claimed second with O'Dell recovering to take third. Bernie Tusko, after challenging the previous two nights, finally put it together and won the Support class main by a half straight over Mike Dalbey and Archie Perez. Results SCRATCH: 1. By Scott Daloisio VICTORVILLE, CA, APR. 12 Mike Faria came home first in the Hi-Desert Invitational at the new look Speedway USA on a hot Sunday afternoon. The event featured a drag racins type format where the first two fmishers in each heat advanced on to the next round while the last two packed it up and headed home. Over the winter Speedway USA was purchased by Jay and Vickie Wright and they have turned the track into a showpiece. In addition to the many improvements they made to the facihty, they attracted riders who had never competed at the track before or riders who only had periodically visited. Such first-time riders included Alan Christian and Dubb Ferrell. A number of name riders were eliminated from the event in the first round of eight heats, including John Sandona, Keith Larsen, Tom Burba and Scotty Brown. The biggest upset of the opening round came in event four. That race featured Alan Chistim, Brad Oxley, Gary Hicks and Greg Hancock. Hancock, who was completing his first week of professional racing, took second behind Christian. He passed Oxley on lap three and that sent both Oxley and Hicks to the grandstands for the remainder of the afternoon. The second round of the Division One riders opened with Bobby Schwartz getting very serious to defeat Andy Northrup. Northrup won the opening race of the day over Schwartz when they were the only two riders on the track and Schwartz was content to cruise. Faria look his second triumph of the day in event 15 over Jeff Johnson, while Dubb Ferrell took event 18 over Ed Castro. Steve Lucero was in second behind Ferrell but when he bobbled Castro slip~d by and earned the transfer. T!:le second round ended when Christian won from Rob Pfeuing, Louis Kossuth and Hancock.
