A SuperSporfs SCOTTUl!!!!!!jA Production J£~la AUTOPAATS' Team Osprey pushed across the' line for second in Mod Production. After two hours, Hyper-Cycle had a comfortable lead over Brink and Son, who had fought their way back past Hoe and Solmax after a lengthy pit stop. Team Suzuki was running seventh, but had just pitted to change both front and rear tires and to put Carroll back on board. The changes proved valuable because Carroll started running 1:32s and 1:33s with the new Michelins, and began a charge that eventually moved Team Suzuki into 'second place. But that took two full hours and when the ha]£way results were tallied, Hyper-Cycle's lead over Brink and Son was only one lap, and Team Phantom riders Terry French and Dennis Costello had moved to third, completing 110 laps. Team Suzuki had gone around the 2.5-mile Willow Springs facility llO times and was quickly closing in on Team Phantom. Team Hoe was holding on to fifLh in front of Silverstar. The next hour proved to be the most critical, mechanically. The first casualty was Team Phantom's transmission, which started making loud whinning noises early in the fourth hour. The next mechanical woe hit Team Suzuki. After taking over second place from Brink and Son, the Suzuki GSXRllOO lost its chain on the front straight; the masterlink clip hooked on a bent guard located behind the footpeg, causing the clip .to come off, according to Ulrich. With Team Suzuki back in the pits, Herzog and Andrew started backing off the pace (up to 1:40s) to save their Michelin slicks and finish the race without a tire change. Team Silverstar, too, was running out of rubber and, after a wild slide in turn three, decided to run slightly slower times and hold onto fourth overall which they ran through the fifth hour. A fierce battle for second ended in the sixth hour when Brink and Sons' GSXRIIOO engine finally gave up, leaving second to Curtis Adams and Bob Reinen of Team Hoe. This also put Silverstar in third overall, with Solmax fourth and Team Suzuki fifth overall at the checkered flag. "Carry built the motor and it ran great," Herzog said in the winner's circle. "And with IO-12-second pit stops, it was just a matter of saving the tires. We slowed way down once we had it locked up." Team Silverstar's Charles Price noted that, "the, tires were getting real scary, but just the fact they finished is amazing." Silye'rstar used Michelin Comp-Ks. • Results H/W S/BK: 1.
